Strange Metallicity and Magnetic Order in the CoNi(Cr/V) Medium-Entropy Alloy System

Faisal Mustafa et al.

Summary: CoNiCr is a prototype alloy with superior cryogenic and high-temperature mechanical strength, corrosion, oxidation resistance, and yet-to-be-explored magnetic and electronic functionalities. The remarkable properties of this ternary system result from atomic radii, electronic configurational mismatch, atomic volume misfit, and magnetically driven chemical short-range order. The study investigates the electric and magnetic properties of a single-phase CoNi(Cr/V) system, where V is introduced to fine-tune the volume misfit. The samples exhibit ultra-small magnetic moments and a strange metallicity revealed through the observation of linear temperature dependence of resistivity.
