Identification of a UDP-glucosyltransferase conferring deoxynivalenol resistance in Aegilops tauschii and wheat

Rizky Pasthika Kirana et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic basis of resistance against Fusarium head blight and the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol in Aegilops tauschii, the diploid progenitor of the wheat D subgenome. By analyzing a panel of Ae. tauschii accessions, a uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucosyltransferase (UGT) gene on chromosome 5D was identified as the causal variant for susceptibility to the mycotoxin. This UGT gene was also found to be involved in DON detoxification in hexaploid wheat. The findings highlight the conservation of this resistance mechanism in wheat and barley.

Deoxynivalenol in food and feed: Recent advances in decontamination strategies

Yingfeng Li et al.

Summary: Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin that contaminates animal feed and crops worldwide. Physical and chemical treatment of DON may affect food's nutrients, safety, and palatability. Biological detoxification methods based on microbial strains or enzymes have the advantages of high specificity, efficiency, and no secondary pollution. This review comprehensively summarizes recently developed strategies for DON detoxification and classifies their mechanisms, while also addressing remaining challenges and suggesting research directions.

The function of UDP-glycosyltransferases in plants and their possible use in crop protection

Hani Gharabli et al.

Summary: Glycosyltransferases are enzymes that transfer glycosyl moieties from a donor to an acceptor. In this study, the glycosylation of phytohormones, secondary metabolites, and xenobiotics by UGTs in plants is reviewed and its role in biotic and abiotic stress response and plant fitness is discussed. The potential benefits and drawbacks of altering UGT expression patterns and heterologous expression of UGTs across plant species to improve stress tolerance are also examined. UGT-based genetic modification of plants could enhance agricultural efficiency and contribute to bioremediation strategies, but more research on the interplay between UGTs in plants is needed to fully unlock their potential in crop resistance.

Microbial detoxification of mycotoxins in food

Nadine Abraham et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins produced by certain fungi pose a significant food safety issue due to their toxicity. Existing physical and chemical methods for mycotoxin removal may reduce food quality, making microbial transformation a promising alternative for detoxification.

Fusarium graminearum Ste3 G-Protein Coupled Receptor: A Mediator of Hyphal Chemotropism and Pathogenesis

Tanya Sharma et al.

Summary: The role of GPCR receptor FgSte3 in the chemotropism and pathogenicity of the filamentous fungus Fusarium graminearum has been characterized. Deletion of FgSte3 compromises the chemotropic response and pathogenicity of the fungus, as indicated by reduced reaction to peroxidase, impaired lesion development on wheat, and decreased infection of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves.

Identification and Functional Characterisation of Two Oat UDP-Glucosyltransferases Involved in Deoxynivalenol Detoxification

Alfia Khairullina et al.

Summary: Two oat genes orthologous to a barley gene associated with resistance to Fusarium were identified and characterized. These genes showed high inducibility by DON and Fusarium infection. Heterologous expression of these genes in yeast conferred resistance to multiple trichothecene mycotoxins. Recombinant enzymes derived from these genes were able to convert DON into DON-3-O-glucoside.
