Local meridional circulation changes contribute to a projected slowdown of the Indian Ocean Walker circulation

Sahil Sharma et al.

Summary: This study finds that the weakening of the Indian Ocean Walker circulation (IWC) is accompanied by a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (10D)-like warming pattern and anomalous meridional circulation. The anomalous meridional circulation is linked to enhanced land-sea thermal contrast and is partially responsible for the weakening of the IWC. These findings highlight the important role of local meridional circulation changes in modulating future IWC changes.

The parametric hurricane rainfall model with moisture and its application to climate change projections

Dasol Kim et al.

Summary: This study develops a new model, named PHRaMM, that incorporates tropospheric water vapor into the PHRaM framework. PHRaMM shows better prediction skills than existing statistical and operational numerical models for TC rainfall in the present climate. Using PHRaMM, the impacts of TC intensity and environmental moisture increase on TC rainfall change in a future climate were evaluated.

Caspian Sea and Black Sea Response to Greenhouse Warming in a High-Resolution Global Climate Model

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: Studies show that with a doubling of CO2 concentration, the surface temperature of the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea will increase by about 2.5 degrees Celsius, while a reduction in wind stress will cause deceleration of the main gyre circulations. Increased future evaporation will result in a decrease in sea level, potentially impacting ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal infrastructures.

Assessing the Influence of Large-Scale Environmental Conditions on the Rainfall Structure of Atlantic Tropical Cyclones: An Observational Study

Dasol Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that the inner-core rainfall strength of Atlantic tropical cyclones is mainly influenced by the inherent primary circulation of the cyclones and less affected by large-scale environmental conditions, while the total rainfall area is primarily influenced by large-scale low and high pressure systems, partially influenced by environmental flows, sea surface temperature, humidity, and maximum wind speed.

Future Changes in the Frequency and Destructiveness of Landfalling Tropical Cyclones Over East Asia Projected by High-Resolution AGCMs

Pang-Chi Hsu et al.

Summary: Future changes in the frequency and destructiveness of landfalling tropical cyclones over East Asia were investigated using high-resolution atmospheric general circulation models forced by sea surface temperature. Despite a projected decrease in frequency, the intensity of landfalling tropical cyclones is expected to increase due to warmer climate conditions, reduced vertical wind shear, and enhanced efficiency of eddy kinetic energy generations.

Factors Controlling Tropical Cyclone Intensification Over the Marginal Seas of China

Summary: The study reveals that factors such as initial intensity and inner-core precipitation rate play a significant role in tropical cyclone intensification over the marginal seas of China, while vertical wind shear and TC fullness are crucial in the western North Pacific.

Recent global decrease in the inner-core rain rate of tropical cyclones

Shifei Tu et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the rainfall rate in the outer region of tropical cyclones has been increasing in the past twenty years, while it has significantly decreased in the inner-core region. Globally, the increase in TC rain rate is mainly attributed to the rising water vapor availability in the atmosphere.

Changing status of tropical cyclones over the north Indian Ocean

Medha Deshpande et al.

Summary: In recent years, the frequency of tropical cyclones in the Arabian Sea has increased, showing significant trends in intensity, frequency, and duration, while the Bay of Bengal has experienced a decrease in both frequency and duration. This increase in tropical cyclone activity over the Arabian Sea is associated with changes in environmental factors such as sea surface temperatures and steering currents.

Global increase in tropical cyclone rain rate

Oscar Guzman et al.

Summary: The study reveals that tropical cyclone rainfall rates have increased by 1.3% per year between 1998 and 2018, driven mainly by stronger rainfall in the outer-core region. The increasing trend is more pronounced in the Northwestern Pacific and North Atlantic and is associated with increases in sea surface temperature and total precipitable water in the tropical cyclone environment.

Future high-resolution El Nino/Southern Oscillation dynamics

Christian Wengel et al.

Summary: High-resolution climate models show improved representation of tropical Pacific mean-state and El Nino/Southern Oscillation sea surface temperature variability. Climate warming leads to weaker ENSO variability, mainly due to stronger latent heat flux damping and weaker advective feedbacks. The study highlights the importance of resolving ocean mesoscale processes for accurate ENSO projections under greenhouse warming.
