The role of major immune cells in myocardial infarction

Qiang Feng et al.

Summary: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a common cardiovascular disease (CVD) that poses a serious threat to human life and health. The immune system plays a crucial role in the development and progression of MI by removing necrotic cardiomyocytes and promoting tissue healing. Cardiac patches, as an emerging method for repairing MI, can be developed through the construction of animal models and provide effective treatment. This review introduces the involvement of immune cells, commonly used animal models, and newly developed cardiac patches in MI, aiming to provide scientific reference for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Fecal Fungal Microbiota (Mycobiome) Study as a Potential Tool for Precision Medicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Domingo C. Balderramo et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence of the role of fungal microbiota in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Fungi can directly promote inflammation or influence bacterial composition through interactions. While studies have shown changes in the fecal fungal microbiota in IBD, there is no clear pattern yet identified. Recent research suggests that characterizing the fecal fungal composition may have therapeutic implications and predict outcomes in certain IBD patients. This review examines the current literature on the potential role of the fecal mycobiome as a tool for precision medicine in IBD. (Gut Liver, Published online June 12, 2023)

Gut Microbiota and Cardiovascular Disease: Evidence on the Metabolic and Inflammatory Background of a Complex Relationship

Antonio Nesci et al.

Summary: Several studies have shown that gut microbiota-host interactions are important for human health and disease, including inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. Dysbiosis is linked to inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as cardiovascular risk factors like atherosclerosis, hypertension, and obesity. The gut microbiota affects cardiovascular risk through metabolic pathways, and translocation of bacteria and their products from the intestines into the systemic circulation contributes to the pro-inflammatory conditions underlying cardiovascular disorders. This review aims to describe the complex interplay between gut microbiota, its metabolites, and the development of cardiovascular diseases, as well as potential interventions to modulate the gut microbiota and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Natriuretic-like Peptide Lebetin 2 Mediates M2 Macrophage Polarization in LPS-Activated RAW264.7 Cells in an IL-10-Dependent Manner

Dorsaf Bouzazi et al.

Summary: Snake natriuretic peptide (NP) Lebetin 2 (L2) has anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the release of inflammatory cytokines and promoting M2 macrophage polarization through activation of IL-10 signaling. L2 increases IL-10 release in a sustained manner and promotes downstream M2 macrophage polarization, while reducing TNF-alpha and IL-6 release in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated cells. The effect of L2 is mediated by stimulating NP receptors.

Inflammation across the spectrum of hypertrophic cardiac phenotypes

Rosa Lillo et al.

Summary: The hypertrophic cardiomyopathy phenotype is a group of genetic and acquired diseases characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy without abnormal cardiac loading conditions. Inflammation plays a critical role in cardiovascular conditions, including cardiomyopathies, and can contribute to cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and dysfunction. Systemic inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of cardiac disease progression and affect the severity and outcome of the phenotype. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the prevalence, clinical significance, and therapeutic implications of inflammation in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and its phenocopies.

The Gut Microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Peng Qiu et al.

Summary: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and intestinal microorganisms play a key role in the development and maintenance of these diseases. However, the specific causes of IBD are still unclear, and it is unknown whether a single transmissible agent is involved. Changes in the bacterial communities in the gut may be due to inflammatory reactions and tissue destruction, rather than causing the disease itself. Antibiotic therapy has generally been ineffective in treating IBD, but recent studies suggest that manipulating the gut microbiota and interacting with the gut immune system through probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics may hold potential in controlling these diseases.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of thromboembolism (TE), particularly in venous TE (VTE). The mechanisms underlying arterial and venous thrombosis in IBD are similar and may be triggered by impaired intestinal barrier and bacterial components.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the burden of ischemic heart disease (IHD) across 21 regions worldwide from 1990 to 2017, stratified by gender, geographic location, and social-demographic status. Despite a global decrease in IHD morbidity and mortality, the burden remains high, particularly in regions with lower socio-economic development. Learning successful strategies to control IHD risks and reduce health disparities is necessary to alleviate the IHD burden.
