m1A methylation modification patterns and metabolic characteristics in hepatocellular carcinoma

Chengcheng Tong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the modification patterns of N1-methyladenosine (m1A) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) samples and evaluated their metabolic characteristics. Three distinct m1A modification patterns were identified, and a scoring system called m1Ascore was developed. The m1Ascore showed clinical value in risk stratification and drug screening. The study provides insights into m1A modification and metabolic heterogeneity in cancer, leading to improved risk stratification and individualized treatment strategies.

Dickkopf-1 Promotes Angiogenesis and is a Biomarker for Hepatic Stem Cell-like Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Tsuyoshi Suda et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of serum DKK-1 as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that DKK-1 levels were significantly elevated in HCC patients and high levels were associated with poor prognosis. The study also demonstrated that anti-DKK-1 antibody treatment inhibited tumor growth, while recombinant DKK-1 promoted cell proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis.

Osteopontin promotes hepatocellular carcinoma progression through inducing JAK2/STAT3/NOX1-mediated ROS production

Qipeng Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that osteopontin (OPN) promotes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production through upregulating the expression of NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1) and activating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. Disruption of the OPN/NOX1 axis might be a promising therapeutic strategy for HCC.

Summary: Post-transcriptional modifications, such as m1A modification, play a crucial role in regulating the behavior and function of RNAs. m1A modification, regulated by writers, erasers, and readers, is reversible and found in various types of RNA. It affects RNA processing, structure, and function, and has been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis.

Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells and Their Implications as a Biomarker for Diagnosis, Prognostication, and Therapeutic Monitoring in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Joseph C. Ahn et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, and current tests like alpha-fetoprotein have limited accuracy. Liver biopsy, while informative, is not routinely used due to invasiveness, leading to a need for new biomarkers. Liquid biopsy, specifically detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), offers potential for early detection and personalized treatment management in HCC patients. Quantitative analysis of CTCs can predict disease prognosis and treatment response, highlighting the importance of developing CTC detection platforms for clinical use.

Toll-like receptor 7 mRNA is reduced in hepatitis C-based liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, out-performs alpha-fetoprotein levels, and with age and serum aspartate aminotransferase is a new diagnostic index

A. A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: TLR-7 mRNA levels perform better than AFP in HCC diagnosis, and the combination of age and AST can improve the performance of TLR-7, predicting early HCC. The index score derived from age, AST, and TLR-7 mRNA is superior in predicting HCC and correlated with certain liver cancer staging systems.

The Role of Liquid Biopsy in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Prognostication

Ismail Labgaa et al.

Summary: Liquid biopsy offers a minimally invasive way to access DNA, RNA, exosomes, and cells circulating in the bloodstream, showing promising potential for improving hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognostication. It may prove to be a valuable tool in refining prognostic systems for HCC by analyzing molecular readouts from solid tumors released into biological fluids.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma is a significant public health issue in Egypt, where a mass screening program for detecting and treating HCV has led to increased detection rates. A multidisciplinary approach to HCC management is widely applied, and various treatment modalities with success rates comparable to global levels are available in Egypt. The Egyptian health authorities have prioritized the elimination of HCV, which is expected to decrease the number of HCC cases in the near future.

Summary: Over 90% of hepatocellular carcinoma cases occur in patients with cirrhosis, with hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus as leading causes. Expression Status and Prognostic Significance of Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase Family Genes in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Shan Tian et al.

Summary: This study found differential expression of GGT family members in primary HCC samples and normal control tissues, with GGT1, GGT5, and GGT7 being correlated with overall survival in HCC patients. GGT family genes were also associated with immune cell infiltration levels in HCC, particularly CD4+ T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Additionally, high serum GGT protein expression was identified as a strong prognostic factor for unfavorable overall survival in HCC patients undergoing curative hepatectomy.
