Clinical Utility and Outcome Prediction of Early ZnT8-IgG Testing and Titer in Type 1 Diabetes

Amanda R. Dahl et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the presence or titer of ZnT8 antibodies (Ab) and the clinical presentation or subsequent disease course in type 1 diabetes patients. The results showed that there were no differences in the characteristics at disease onset or in the subsequent follow-up between those with and without ZnT8-Ab or between those with high or low titers of ZnT8-Ab, except for a small difference in cumulative excess glucose. Further study on the effect of ZnT8-Ab titer is warranted.

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults in China

Junlin Qiu et al.

Summary: Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a type of diabetes caused by slow progression of autoimmune damage to pancreatic beta cells. General immune genetic effects associated with LADA have been found, but there are also some racial differences. The epidemiology and phenotypic characteristics of LADA may vary between Chinese and Caucasian populations.

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA) Is Likely to Represent a Mixed Population of Autoimmune (Type 1) and Nonautoimmune (Type 2) Diabetes

Angus G. Jones et al.

Summary: LADA, diagnosed after age 35, presents clinical features similar to type 2 diabetes but with type 1 diabetes-associated islet autoantibodies. The current definition of LADA identifies a group with features intermediate between typical type 1 and type 2 diabetes, leading to difficulties in classification. Improved approaches are needed to increase test specificity and better understand the detailed pathophysiological components of late-onset autoimmune diabetes.

Relationships between Islet-Specific Autoantibody Titers and the Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Summary: In diabetic patients, those with high levels of islet-specific autoantibodies tend to have poorer islet beta-cell function, but less abdominal obesity and fewer features of the metabolic syndrome.
