Apoptosis promoting activity of selected plant steroid in MRMT-1 breast cancer cell line by modulating mitochondrial permeation pathway

Muhammed Aslam et al.

Summary: Escape from apoptosis is a key characteristic of cancer cells, and mitochondria play a crucial role in regulating the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Hexokinase2 (HK2) is essential for cell survival and its binding to mitochondria promotes cell proliferation. Peimine has the potential to target both HK2 and AKT1, as predicted by network pharmacology. In cell culture studies, peimine induces cell death through the intrinsic apoptosis pathway and inhibits glucose transport by inhibiting membrane HK2.

Synthesis, crystal structure and spectral studies of silver(I) cyclohexyldiphenylphosphine complexes: towards the biological evaluation on malignant and non-malignant cells

Gadada Naganagowda et al.

Summary: Cancer is a fast-growing and deadly disease, necessitating the search for alternative anti-cancer agents. Silver(I) phosphine complexes were synthesized and evaluated as potential anti-cancer agents. However, these complexes exhibited significant cytotoxicity to both malignant and non-malignant cells, indicating that they are not suitable for anti-cancer treatment in their current form.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Summary: This study synthesized twenty new Tet and d-Tet derivatives, with ten showing better cytotoxic effects than the parent compounds, and compound 4g exhibited the strongest cell growth inhibitory activity. Further investigation revealed that compound 4g inhibited A549 cell proliferation by arresting the G2/M cell cycle, reducing MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression, inducing apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway regulated by mitochondria, and blocking the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. These findings suggest that compound 4g may be a promising drug candidate for lung cancer therapy.
