Investigation of the role of the autophagic protein LC3B in the regulation of human airway epithelium cell differentiation in COPD using a biomimetic model

Shiue-Luen Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, we established a 3D human small airway tissue model and found that the autophagic protein LC3B affects the differentiation of COPD cells. We also observed that chloroquine and ivermectin have different effects on LC3B, leading to differentiation of ciliated cells and goblet cells in COPD.

Global Initiative for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease The 2020 GOLD Science Committee Report on COVID-19 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

David M. G. Halpin et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about managing COPD patients and whether therapy adjustments are needed. The GOLD Science Committee provided an overview of COPD management during the pandemic, recommending caution with spirometry and maintaining infection control measures. Patients with COPD should continue their usual treatment but be monitored more closely if they develop moderate to severe COVID-19.

Autophagy in inflammation, infection, and immunometabolism

Vojo Deretic

Summary: Autophagy is a crucial cellular protection mechanism that impacts various diseases when disrupted, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. It plays a role in clearing harmful substances in and out of cells, protecting against inflammatory damage. The article focuses on the role of autophagy in inflammation, as well as its intersections with immunity, metabolism, and organelle functions.

Summary: This study conducted a rapid meta-analysis on the effects of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine on the survival of COVID-19 patients. It found that treatment with hydroxychloroquine was associated with increased mortality, while there was no benefit from chloroquine.

Autophagy Promotes Cigarette Smoke-Initiated and Elastin-Driven Bronchitis-Like Airway Inflammation in Mice

Summary: This study demonstrates that autophagy plays a crucial role in the development of bronchitis-like airway inflammation in a COPD mouse model induced by CS. Inhibition of autophagy, such as with 3-MA, can effectively suppress the development of airway inflammation.

Necroptosis Signaling Promotes Inflammation, Airway Remodeling, and Emphysema in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Zhe Lu et al.

Summary: This study found that necroptosis is increased in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in experimental COPD, and inhibiting necroptosis can alleviate smoking-induced airway inflammation, airway remodeling, and emphysema. Deletion of Ripk3 or Mlkl and treatment with qVD-OPh can reduce lung cell death induced by chronic smoking exposure.

Phosphorylation of NF-κBp65 drives inflammation-mediated hepatocellular carcinogenesis and is a novel therapeutic target

Xuan Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that phosphorylation of NF-kappa Bp65 plays a crucial role in the hepatocellular carcinogenesis mediated by ARRB1, and inhibiting the phosphorylation of NF-kappa Bp65 can restrain the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. The findings suggest that phosphorylation of NF-kappa Bp65 could be a potential therapeutic target for HCC.

The Inflammatory Response Induced by RELMβ Upregulates IL-8 and IL-1β Expression in Bronchial Epithelial Cells in COPD

Li Che et al.

Summary: The research found that RELM beta can promote the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-8 and IL-1 beta in airway epithelial cells of COPD patients, and this effect is mediated by the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Therefore, RELM beta may be a potential target for the treatment of COPD.

Summary: The study demonstrated that NLRP3 inflammasome activation and exosome release containing inflammasome products contribute to lung inflammation during emphysema, while EA at lung-specific acupoints can attenuate inflammasome activation and exosome release, reducing inflammatory response.

An evaluation of co-use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin on cardiac outcomes: A pharmacoepidemiological study to inform use during the COVID19 pandemic

Scott M. Vouri et al.

Summary: This study compared the risk of cardiac adverse events when using combinations of chloroquine with azithromycin or amoxicillin. The results showed that the combination of routine doses of chloroquine and azithromycin did not significantly increase arrhythmias in a real-world population, but the conclusions were limited due to a small sample size and outcome rates. Further research is needed.
