The Association of Alcohol Consumption with Glaucoma and Related Traits Findings from the UK Biobank

Kelsey V. Stuart et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between alcohol consumption and glaucoma and related traits, assess whether genetic predisposition to glaucoma modified these associations, and perform MR experiments to investigate causal effects. The findings showed consistent and adverse associations between alcohol intake and glaucoma and related traits, even at levels below the current guidelines in the UK and the US.

Alcohol, Intraocular Pressure, and Open-Angle Glaucoma A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Kelsey Stuart et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the association between alcohol use and intraocular pressure (IOP) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The findings suggest that habitual alcohol use is associated with higher IOP and prevalence of ocular hypertension, as well as a positive association between any use of alcohol and OAG. However, the certainty of evidence is very low and the effect sizes are small.

An introduction to inverse probability of treatment weighting in observational research

Nicholas C. Chesnaye et al.

Summary: This article introduces the concept of inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and its application in adjusting for measured confounding in observational research, using a clinical example in nephrology. IPTW involves calculating the probability of exposure to the risk factor or intervention of interest based on individual characteristics (propensity score), and then calculating weights as the inverse of the propensity score. Application of these weights creates a pseudopopulation with balanced confounders across exposed and unexposed groups in studies, and it can also be applied in longitudinal studies to address informative censoring and time-dependent confounding.

The changes in retinal nerve fiber layer and macular thickness in Chinese patients with alcohol dependency

Yanhong Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the RNFL and macular thickness were thinner in alcohol-dependent patients compared to healthy controls, and were closely associated with alcohol consumption. The decrease in cognitive functioning of alcohol-dependent patients was linked to an increase in optic cup volume.

The Role of Anterior Chamber Depth on Post-operative Refractive Error After Phacovitrectomy

Gabriel Katz et al.

Summary: Phacovitrectomy has lower post-operative refraction accuracy compared to cataract surgery, potentially requiring adjustments to pre-operative calculations. There is no change in axial length post-surgery, but a significant increase in pre-operative ACD. Different vitreous fillings do not impact refractive error.

Summary: The study found that among German preschool children with immigrant backgrounds, children with obesity were more likely to have visual impairment. Therefore, strategies are needed to support vulnerable groups.
