Summary: This scoping review examines the experiences of healthcare workers in long-term care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis highlights moral distress, emotional exhaustion, and a sense of duty to care as the main themes. These findings emphasize the need to address the LTC workforce crisis and evaluate best practices for supporting the mental health concerns of healthcare workers during and after COVID-19.

Summary: This cohort study examines the changes in nursing home staffing during and after a severe COVID-19 outbreak. The findings show that severe outbreaks led to significant declines in staffing levels due to increased absences and departures, which remained reduced even 16 weeks after the outbreak started. Facilities attempted to address the staffing challenges by temporarily increasing hiring, contract staff, and overtime, but these measures were not sufficient to fully replace lost staff, particularly certified nursing assistants. The study highlights the need for policy action to ensure adequate staffing levels during and after nursing home outbreaks to protect resident health.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing home staff faced ongoing constraints on testing and continued reliance on crisis standards for extended use of personal protective equipment. They expressed fears of infection, empathy for residents, burnout due to increased workloads, staffing shortages, and emotional burden, as well as the demoralizing impact of negative media coverage and lack of organizational communication and teamwork. These challenges are likely to contribute to increased burnout, turnover, and staff shortages in the long term for this already strained and vulnerable workforce.

Summary: Nursing staff turnover is an important quality indicator for nursing homes. Recent data collection has allowed for the calculation of turnover rates, which were found to be correlated with facility location, ownership status, patient census, and star ratings. Disseminating this information could provide valuable insights for policymakers, payers, and consumers.

Summary: While the total number of nurse staff hours in nursing homes did not decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were concerns that increased stresses and demands on staff due to the pandemic have led to a perception of shortages. This perception of shortages was found to be driven by factors such as high COVID-19 prevalence in certain counties, low Medicaid census, and the nature of for-profit vs. non-profit nursing homes.
