Association between traumatic brain injury and suicidality using a mediation approach and MarketScan

Gabrielle F. Miller et al.

Summary: This study examines the mediation effects of substance use, psychiatric disorder, and sleep disorder on the associations between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and suicidal ideation/attempts. The results show that these mediators explain less than 30% of the relationship, reinforcing the importance of primary prevention of TBI and monitoring patients with a TBI for risk of suicide in the first 6-12 months following injury.

Examining the Relationship Between Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Development of Mental Illness Disorders in a Mid-Term Follow-up Period

J. Heath Wilder et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the number of patients affected by a mental illness within 3 years of a concussion and explore demographic differences that may influence a mental illness diagnosis. Using a nationwide database, patients aged 18-45 years with no previous mental illness and diagnosed with a concussion were identified, and their subsequent diagnosis of mental illness within 3 years was analyzed. The study found that within 3 years after a concussion, 48% of patients were later diagnosed with a mental illness, with higher proportions compared to the general population.

Association of Traumatic Brain Injury With the Risk of Developing Chronic Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Neurological, and Psychiatric Disorders

Saef Izzy et al.

Summary: This study found that any severity of TBI is associated with an increased risk of chronic cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurological comorbidities in patients without baseline diagnoses. Comorbidities occurring after TBI are associated with higher mortality, suggesting the need for targeted screening program for multisystem diseases after TBI.

Time-dependent suicide rates among Army soldiers returning from an Afghanistan/Iraq deployment, by military rank and component

Rachel Sayko Adams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine time-dependent suicide risk in the years following return from deployment, and whether such rates vary by military rank and component. Findings showed that the lowest-ranking enlisted soldiers had the highest suicide rate, which remained elevated for 11 years postdeployment. Results for females were consistent with the overall cohort. These findings underscore the importance of understanding rank as a social determinant of health.

Traumatic Brain Injury Classification Variability During the Afghanistan/Iraq Conflicts: Surveillance, Clinical, Research, and Policy Implications

Rachel Sayko Adams et al.

Summary: This study compares the classification of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among military members during conflicts and finds that a more precise diagnosis code set provides a more accurate assessment of TBI prevalence and severity. The study calls for reflection on decisions regarding TBI case ascertainment and recommends efforts to achieve consensus for improved monitoring, screening, and diagnosis.

Rationale, design, and methods: A randomized placebo-controlled trial of an immunomodulatory probiotic intervention for Veterans with PTSD

Lisa A. Brenner et al.

Summary: This article describes the rationale, design, and methods of a randomized placebo-controlled trial of Lactobacillus rhoosus GG for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in United States military Veterans. The trial aims to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms of PTSD through the use of immunoregulatory/antiinflammatory probiotics, providing evidence for this innovative intervention strategy.

A Comorbid Mental Disorder Paradox: Using Causal Diagrams to Understand Associations Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Suicide

Tammy Jiang et al.

Summary: This article explores methodological biases that may lead to the paradoxical finding that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) decreases suicide risk using directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). The concept of collider bias is defined as a potential explanation for the protective association found in some studies, which interpret it as evidence of PTSD reducing suicide risk. Recommendations include collecting longitudinal measurements of psychiatric comorbidities and using DAGs to anticipate biases in study design and analysis decisions.

Health symptoms after war zone deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury: contributions of mental disorders and lifetime brain injuries

Scott D. McDonald et al.

Summary: This study found that, even after adjusting for various factors, deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during OEF/OIF/OND was still associated with several persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCSs), including headaches, sleep disturbance, and difficulty making decisions. In addition, deployment-related mTBI was also linked to symptoms not commonly associated with mTBI, such as nausea/upset stomach and numbness/tingling.
