Association between traumatic brain injury and suicidality using a mediation approach and MarketScan

Summary: This study examines the mediation effects of substance use, psychiatric disorder, and sleep disorder on the associations between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and suicidal ideation/attempts. The results show that these mediators explain less than 30% of the relationship, reinforcing the importance of primary prevention of TBI and monitoring patients with a TBI for risk of suicide in the first 6-12 months following injury.

Examining the Relationship Between Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Development of Mental Illness Disorders in a Mid-Term Follow-up Period

Summary: The study aimed to determine the number of patients affected by a mental illness within 3 years of a concussion and explore demographic differences that may influence a mental illness diagnosis. Using a nationwide database, patients aged 18-45 years with no previous mental illness and diagnosed with a concussion were identified, and their subsequent diagnosis of mental illness within 3 years was analyzed. The study found that within 3 years after a concussion, 48% of patients were later diagnosed with a mental illness, with higher proportions compared to the general population.

Association of Traumatic Brain Injury With the Risk of Developing Chronic Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Neurological, and Psychiatric Disorders

Time-dependent suicide rates among Army soldiers returning from an Afghanistan/Iraq deployment, by military rank and component

Summary: This study aimed to examine time-dependent suicide risk in the years following return from deployment, and whether such rates vary by military rank and component. Findings showed that the lowest-ranking enlisted soldiers had the highest suicide rate, which remained elevated for 11 years postdeployment. Results for females were consistent with the overall cohort. These findings underscore the importance of understanding rank as a social determinant of health.

Health symptoms after war zone deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury: contributions of mental disorders and lifetime brain injuries

Summary: This study found that, even after adjusting for various factors, deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during OEF/OIF/OND was still associated with several persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCSs), including headaches, sleep disturbance, and difficulty making decisions. In addition, deployment-related mTBI was also linked to symptoms not commonly associated with mTBI, such as nausea/upset stomach and numbness/tingling.
