Infants Admitted to US Intensive Care Units for RSV Infection During the 2022 Seasonal Peak

Natasha Halasa et al.

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and hospitalization in infants worldwide. This study evaluates the characteristics and outcomes of RSV-related critical illness in US infants during the peak transmission of RSV in 2022. The findings indicate that most infants requiring intensive care for RSV LRTIs in the US were young, healthy, and born at term. These results emphasize the importance of RSV preventive interventions targeting all infants to reduce the burden of severe RSV illness.

Summary: This article reports a reduction in RSV antibody levels and neutralization activity in serum from women of childbearing age and infants during the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting the notion of relatively short-lived antibody immunity in infants and explaining the interseasonal resurgence of RSV cases.

Derivation and Validation of the Critical Bronchiolitis Score for the PICU

Michael C. Mount et al.

Summary: This study developed a bronchiolitis-specific illness severity score (Critical Bronchiolitis Score) that outperformed mortality-based scores in predicting duration of respiratory support and length of stay in the pediatric intensive care unit. The score was derived and internally validated using a large database of patients with bronchiolitis. It demonstrated a stronger association with the study outcomes compared to existing illness severity scores. This score has potential utility in clinical trials and observational studies related to bronchiolitis.

Off-season RSV epidemics in Australia after easing of COVID-19 restrictions

John-Sebastian Eden et al.

Summary: Non-pharmaceutical interventions and travel restrictions for COVID-19 have impacted the circulation of respiratory viruses, including RSV. This study reports the resurgence of RSV in Australia following the lifting of some restrictions, and describes a reduction in genetic diversity in circulating RSV clades.

Trends in US Pediatric Hospital Admissions in 2020 Compared With the Decade Before the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jonathan H. Pelletier et al.

Summary: This study analyzed pediatric admissions in 49 US hospitals and found a decrease in pediatric admissions across a range of diseases in 2020. While some conditions may have decreased in incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic, it also suggests unmet pediatric care needs.

Jonathan H. Pelletier et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, the proportions of children with bronchiolitis admitted to an ICU and receiving NIV have substantially increased, while the proportion receiving IMV has remained unchanged. Further study is needed to better understand the factors underlying these temporal patterns.

Availability of Pediatric Inpatient Services in the United States

Anna M. Cushing et al.

Summary: This study evaluated trends in pediatric inpatient unit capacity, access, and closures across the United States. The results showed a decrease in pediatric inpatient units and beds, particularly in rural areas, while PICU beds increased, mainly in children's hospitals. Low-volume pediatric units without an associated PICU were at highest risk of closure.

COVID-19-associated school closures and related efforts to sustain education and subsidized meal programs, United States, February 18-June 30, 2020

Nicole Zviedrite et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, school closures were implemented as a community mitigation measure recommended by CDC. This study analyzed the patterns of school closures and how K-12 districts adjusted their education delivery and meal provision methods. The research found that the majority of districts offered distance learning and continued subsidized meal programs during the closures.
