Role of biomarkers and emerging technologies in defining and assessing neurobiological recovery after sport-related concussion: a systematic review

Jason B. Tabor et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the role of fluid-based biomarkers, advanced neuroimaging, genetic testing, and emerging technologies in defining and assessing neurobiological recovery after sport-related concussion (SRC). A total of 205 studies were included, showing that neuroimaging and fluid-based biomarkers can detect the acute effects of concussion and track neurobiological recovery after injury. Emerging technologies have also shown potential in the assessment of SRC. However, there is insufficient evidence to recommend the use of these tools in clinical practice.

Characterizing Factors Influencing Baseline Plasma Biomarkers for Sport-Related Concussion in Adolescents

Jason Benjamin Tabor et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between pre-injury plasma levels and brain concussion-related proteins in healthy adolescent sport participants, considering factors such as previous concussion, age, and sex. The study found differences in plasma levels of concussion-related proteins among adolescents of different genders and ages, while history of concussion and menstrual cycle were not associated with the protein levels. These findings support further research on these blood biomarkers in the field of adolescent sport-related concussion.

Investigating the use of plasma pTau181 in retired contact sports athletes

Anna Vasilevskaya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of plasma pTau181 as a non-invasive measure to assess the risk of neurodegenerative diseases in retired athletes. The results showed that retired athletes had higher levels of plasma pTau181 and its levels were associated with abnormalities in certain brain regions. However, baseline pTau181 levels were not predictive of longitudinal changes in brain volumes or white-matter integrity in the athletes.

Blood-based traumatic brain injury biomarkers - Clinical utilities and regulatory pathways in the United States, Europe and Canada

Kevin K. Wang et al.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global health issue, and biomarkers aid in the diagnosis and pathophysiological characterization of TBI. Major consortium multicenter observational studies have been created in the USA, Europe, and Canada, with the formation of the International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research (InTBIR) to facilitate data integration and dissemination.
