Assessing the validity of race and ethnicity coding in administrative Medicare data for reporting outcomes among Medicare advantage beneficiaries from 2015 to 2017

Andrew W. Huang et al.

Summary: The validity of race/ethnicity coding in Medicare data was assessed in this study, along with the potential biased outcome reporting by race/ethnicity among Medicare Advantage beneficiaries due to misclassification errors. The findings indicate that the current Medicare race/ethnicity codes result in biased outcome reporting for non-Hispanic American Indian Alaska Native beneficiaries. It is necessary to revise the race/ethnicity categories in order to better represent the multiracial/ethnic identities of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.

Structural Racism In Historical And Modern US Health Care Policy

Ruqaiijah Yearby et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the existing health inequities faced by racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States. These groups have suffered disproportionately from infections and deaths caused by COVID-19, yet they still lack equal access to healthcare and vaccines. This is largely due to structural racism in US healthcare policy, which favors the White population and disadvantages racial and ethnic minority populations. This article provides a historical context and detailed account of modern structural racism in healthcare policy, focusing on its impact on healthcare coverage, financing, and quality.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of opioid use disorder among older adults in the U.S. has increased by over 3-fold since 2013. Young-old beneficiaries (aged 65-69 years) were found to have a higher prevalence compared to other older adults, while dually eligible beneficiaries consistently had a greater burden of opioid use disorder than Medicare-only beneficiaries. Among different racial/ethnic groups, Blacks and American Indians/Alaskan Natives were more vulnerable to opioid use disorder.
