Panchromatic Pt/TiO2-Based Photocatalysts Sensitized with Carboxylated Chlorin Dyads for Water Splitting Hydrogen Evolution

Tianfang Zheng et al.

Summary: Harvesting and converting solar energy into hydrogen production is a new strategy for addressing the global energy crisis. In this study, three chlorophyll-related sensitizers were designed to extend the photo-response of TiO2 photocatalysts, enabling panchromatic light-absorption and simulating the charge separation process in natural photosynthesis. The Pt/TiO2 composite sensitized with Chl-alpha type dyad demonstrated the best photocatalytic performance for water splitting hydrogen evolution reaction, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 5.4 mmol g(-1)h(-1). Various spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements were conducted to understand the key factors influencing the performance of Pt/TiO2-based photocatalysts. This work provides valuable insights for the development of new organic dye-sensitizers to enhance the performance of TiO2-based photocatalysts.

Effect of end groups on fluorene based dyes without carboxyl anchors as efficient co-sensitizer for retarding charge recombination in DSSC applications

Rajagopalan Raman et al.

Summary: In this study, fluorene-based metal-free organic dyes of the simple A-pi-D-pi-A type, denoted as DICTF and DRCTF, carrying different terminal units without carboxylic acid, were synthesized and utilized as effective co-sensitizers for DSSC. The photo physical, electrochemical, and photo-voltaic properties of the dyes were investigated by tuning the electron-accepting cyanated terminal units. The results showed that stepwise co-sensitization with DRCTF/N-719 led to a higher PCE (8.22%) compared to bare N-719 alone (4.23%) or DICTF/N-719 co-sensitization (6.54%). EIS analysis indicated improved recombination kinetics and extended electron lifetime in the co-sensitized devices. The implementation of a new stepwise co-sensitization strategy, where the main sensitizer has carboxyl anchors and the co-sensitizer does not have an anchoring group, resulted in enhanced performance of DSSC with panchromatic absorption and reduced dye aggregation.
