The ascending arousal system promotes optimal performance through mesoscale network integration in a visuospatial attentional task

Gabriel Wainstein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ascending arousal and attentional load on large-scale network dynamics using pupillometry, functional MRI, and graph theoretical analysis. Results indicated that attentional load effects were observable in pupil diameter measurements and brain regions that modulated their BOLD activity, with regional patterns of network reconfiguration correlating with the distribution of alpha 2a adrenergic receptor. These findings strengthen the link between ascending noradrenergic activity, large-scale network integration, and cognitive performance.
