Below the Urbach Edge: Solar Cell Loss Analysis Based on Full External Quantum Efficiency Spectra

Jakub Holovsky et al.

Summary: We propose a new approach to analyze the loss in solar cells. This approach uses the external quantum efficiency (EQE) measured with high sensitivity to consider the impact of defects. Our analysis takes into account the full EQE, including states below the Urbach edge, and incorporates corrections for band-filling and light-trapping. We validate this new metric on various photovoltaic materials and confirm its accuracy through electrical simulations. Any deviations between the new metric and experimental open-circuit voltage are attributed to the presence of localized defects and violations of the assumption of flat quasi-Fermi levels in the device.

Laser-based monolithic series interconnection of two-terminal perovskite-CIGSe tandem solar cells: determination of the optimal scribe line properties

Christof Schultz et al.

Summary: To achieve a monolithic series interconnection of tandem solar cell devices, a two-terminal interconnection scheme is introduced that includes an additional patterning step called iso-cut. The implementation of this scheme requires process development for four structuring steps, which was achieved by varying the laser parameters. By characterizing the scribe line properties, optimal patterning parameters and suitable process windows were derived for each step, providing a prerequisite for loss-free monolithic series interconnection in a tandem module.

Electrical properties of perovskite solar cells by illumination intensity and temperature-dependent photoluminescence imaging

Anh Dinh Bui et al.

Summary: A contactless, imaging-based procedure was reported to spatially resolve electronic properties of PSCs, including iV(oc), n(id), and E-A, using illumination intensity and temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The illumination intensity and temperature dependence allowed for the extraction of electronic parameters and investigation of their changes on fully and partially fabricated devices.

Upscaling of perovskite solar modules: The synergy of fully evaporated layer fabrication and all-laser-scribed interconnections

David B. Ritzer et al.

Summary: This study introduces all-evaporated perovskite PV modules with all thin films coated by established vacuum deposition processes. A common laser source is utilized to realize interconnection lines for solar modules, resulting in low series resistance and high conversion efficiency with minimal upscaling losses. Compared to other fabrication approaches, this process shows reduced complexity and high geometrical fill factor.

Near surface defects: Cause of deficit between internal and external open-circuit voltage in solar cells

Mohit Sood et al.

Summary: The study reveals the distinct interface recombination characteristics in copper indium di-selenide solar cells, which are not affected by reduced interface bandgap or Fermi-level pinning. Experimental analysis and numerical simulations suggest that the V-OC deficit may be related to acceptor defects, highlighting the need for complementary techniques to identify the cause of interface recombination in the devices.

How band tail recombination influences the open-circuit voltage of solar cells

Max Hilaire Wolter et al.

Summary: Band tails have a significant impact on the power conversion efficiency of solar cells, particularly in relation to the open-circuit voltage loss. By incorporating alkali atoms, band tails can be deliberately adjusted to improve efficiency in thin-film solar cells. The presence of band tails increases radiative recombination and nonradiative recombination losses in solar cells.

Imaging and quantifying non-radiative losses at 23% efficient inverted perovskite solar cells interfaces

Stefania Cacovich et al.

Summary: Interface engineering using passivating agents is an effective strategy to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells. This study investigates the interface and device physics of high efficiency inverted solar cells, quantifying charge recombination and losses. The results show that organic passivation mainly affects the perovskite/PCBM interface, and the use of organic passivation maximizes the photovoltaic figures of merit.

Life on the Urbach Edge

Esma Ugur et al.

Summary: The Urbach energy is a metric used to describe the disorder in a semiconductor and can be measured directly using optical techniques. It provides a single value that represents the optoelectronic performance potential of a semiconductor. In solar cells, the Urbach energy has been found to predict the minimal open-circuit-voltage deficit of a material. Considering the Urbach energy in performance calculations gives more realistic limits for power conversion efficiency than classical theories. It is also often correlated with the Stokes shift and carrier mobility of a semiconductor.

Laser-based series interconnection of chalcopyrite und perovskite solar cells: Analysis of material modifications and implications for achieving small dead area widths

Christof Schultz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses for patterning CIGSe and metal halide perovskite solar cell absorber layers. The results show that the laser pulses lead to material modification in the vicinity of the scribed lines for CIGSe, but not for perovskite absorber layers. Numerical calculations suggest that this effect is due to the lower thickness of the perovskite layer and the higher laser fluence required for perovskite ablation. The unaffected edge regions in perovskite enable a reduction of the dead area width and an increase in power conversion efficiency and fill factor.

Enhanced recombination next to laser-patterned lines in CIGSe solar cells revealed by spectral and time-resolved photoluminescence

Christof Schultz et al.

Summary: Laser-based patterning of CIGSe solar cell absorber layers introduces material modifications near the patterned lines, affecting the composition, electrical properties, and efficiency. Cu vacancies and anti-sites formed by the laser pulses create additional energy states in the band gap. Despite the reduction in charge carrier lifetime near the scribed lines, laser-based patterning outperforms needle-based patterning.

A universal Urbach rule for disordered organic semiconductors

Christina Kaiser et al.

Summary: The absorption onset sharpness in crystalline semiconductors is characterized by temperature-dependent Urbach energies, quantifying both static and dynamic disorder. The applicability of the exponential-tail model to disordered systems has long been debated. However, sub-gap absorption in organic semiconductors is found to be universally dominated by thermal broadening at low photon energies, with the Urbach energy equalling the thermal energy regardless of static disorder. Our findings provide insight into the meaning of the Urbach energy in molecular solids and present a strategy to determine excitonic disorder energy.

How photoluminescence can predict the efficiency of solar cells

Susanne Siebentritt et al.

Summary: The efficiency of solar cells is influenced by photocurrent, open circuit voltage, and fill factor, which in turn is affected by the diode factor. Photoluminescence measurements can reveal important parameters in solar cells, while the absorption spectrum of the absorber helps determine tail states, affecting the overall efficiency.
