Growing single-crystalline seeds on lithiophobic substrates to enable fast-charging lithium-metal batteries

Zhaohui Wu et al.

Summary: Controlling the nucleation and growth is essential for enabling long-life Li-metal batteries. Here, the authors report the growth of faceted single-crystalline Li seeds on a lithiophobic Fe/LiF composite substrate that enables dense Li deposition under fast-charging conditions. A cell using a 3 mAh cm(-2) LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (LiNMC811) cathode, onefold excess of lithium and 3 g Ah(-1) electrolyte cycles at a 1 C rate for more than 130 cycles with 80% capacity retention, a 550% improvement over the baseline cells. These findings advance the understanding of lithium nucleation and pave the way for realizing high-energy, fast-charging Li-metal batteries.

A new approach to stabilize the electrochemical performance of Li metal batteries through the structure alteration of CNT scaffolds

Junghwan Kim et al.

Summary: Li-metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted renewed interest due to their high specific capacity and low operating potential, which can help overcome the limitations of conventional Li-ion batteries. However, poor coulombic efficiency and dendritic Li formation pose challenges for the commercial use of Li-metal anodes. Among various strategies, the utilization of 3D current collectors, specifically carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), has shown promising results in improving the electrochemical stability of LMBs. The MWNT current collector facilitates uniform and stable Li deposition, thereby reducing the growth of dendritic Li and contributing to the stable operation of Li-metal cells at high current densities.

A key strategy to form a LiF-based SEI layer for a lithium-ion battery anode with enhanced cycling stability by introducing a semi-ionic C-F bond

Kyung Hoon Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces a semi-ionic C-F bond on the surface of graphite to enhance the cycling stability of lithium-ion batteries by forming a stable LiF-based solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the anode. The semi-ionic C-F bond improved the formation of a stable SEI layer and decreased side reactions with HF, resulting in excellent long-term cycling stability. Additionally, the anode with semi-ionic C-F bonds exhibited a lower volume expansion compared to pristine anodes, highlighting the effectiveness of this approach.
