Cathode materials for single-phase solid-solid conversion Li-S batteries

Jung Tae Kim et al.

Summary: Despite the challenges of low energy densities, capacity fade, and self-discharge in lithium-sulfur batteries, shuttle-free lithium-sulfur batteries operating via single-phase solid-solid conversion are an advanced technology with great potential to promote the adoption of lithium-sulfur batteries. This review provides a fundamental understanding of shuttle-free lithium-sulfur batteries by comparing their operating mechanism with traditional lithium-sulfur batteries. Various strategies for enabling shuttle-free lithium-sulfur batteries in liquid and solid state, with a focus on cathode materials, are also presented. Perspectives for future research and practical engineering design are provided to enhance the development of shuttle-free lithium-sulfur battery technology.

Correlations between precipitation reactions and electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur batteries probed by operando scattering techniques

Yu-Chuan Chien et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the electrochemical processes in the positive electrode of lithium-sulfur batteries is crucial for efficient utilization of the active material. This study combines small-angle and wide-angle scattering measurements along with cell resistance analysis to investigate the discharge mechanisms in operating lithium-sulfur cells. The results suggest that precipitates mainly grow in number rather than size, and the structure of the carbon matrix remains unaffected. Comparisons between small-angle and wide-angle scattering indicate the presence of amorphous discharge products at low discharge rates. Further analysis reveals a correlation between diffusion resistance and compositional change of the electrolyte, suggesting that Li-ion deficiency limits sulfur utilization at medium discharge rates.

Carbon-free and binder-free Li-Al alloy anode enabling an all-solid-state Li-S battery with high energy and stability

Hui Pan et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of aluminum as a carbon-free and binder-free anode for all-solid-state Li-S batteries. The aluminum anode shows excellent compatibility and stability with the electrolyte, and the all-solid-state Li-S battery exhibits good cycling performance and specific energy. This work provides a feasible anode selection for all-solid-state Li-S batteries and promotes their practical application.

Predicting Charge Transfer Stability between Sulfide Solid Electrolytes and Li Metal Anodes

Haesun Park et al.

Summary: The research investigates the reduction or oxidation of solid electrolytes by battery electrodes, finding that most solid electrolytes are susceptible to electron injection, except for Li3BS3 which shows resistance to reduction. Comparing charge transfer stability with chemical stability allows for a comprehensive assessment of interfacial stability. This approach is demonstrated through experiments on the Li/Li2H2PO4/LGPS interface system.

Quantitatively analyzing the failure processes of rechargeable Li metal batteries

Yuxuan Xiang et al.

Summary: The practical use of lithium metal in high-energy density lithium metal batteries is hindered by the continuous formation of lithium dendrites and irreversibly formed solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs). By combining operando nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with ex situ titration gas chromatography (TGC) and mass spectrometry titration (MST) techniques, a solid foundation for quantifying the evolution of dead lithium metal and SEI separately has been established. The existence of LiH has been identified, causing deviations in the quantification results of dead lithium metal obtained by these techniques. Quantitative studies on the formation of inactive lithium under different operating conditions have revealed a general two-stage failure process for lithium metal.
