Tracking the Catalyst Layer Depth-Dependent Electrochemical Degradation of a Bimodal Pt/C Fuel Cell Catalyst: A Combined Operando Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering Study

Johanna Schroeder et al.

Summary: This study presents a combination of operando small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering to investigate the changes in mean particle sizes and phase fractions in fuel cell catalyst layers during accelerated stress tests. The results indicate that the degradation mechanism of the catalyst is classical Ostwald ripening via local diffusion of metal atoms on the support, rather than electrochemical Ostwald ripening. Furthermore, the study shows that the degradation of the catalyst layer is depth-dependent, suggesting the potential for future improvement of catalyst stability through a depth-dependent catalyst design.

Capabilities and limitations of rotating disk electrodes versus membrane electrode assemblies in the investigation of electrocatalysts

Timon Lazaridis et al.

Summary: Cost-competitive fuel cells and water electrolysers require efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen reactions. Rotating disk electrodes (RDEs) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are common tools for assessing electrocatalyst activity and durability. However, RDE technique cannot answer certain scientific questions. Therefore, we advocate for the greater adoption of MEA testing in the early stages of electrocatalyst development.

Toward a Comprehensive Understanding of Cation Effects in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

ChungHyuk Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of cation contamination on fuel cell performance were comprehensively understood through controlled doping of electrodes. The research identified that around 44% of Co2+ exchange in the ionomer can be tolerated in the electrode, with performance losses mainly induced by oxygen and proton transport losses. It was also found that Co2+ preferentially resides in the electrode under wet operating conditions, providing insights for strategies to mitigate undesired effects when using alloy catalysts.

Tracking Nanoparticle Degradation across Fuel Cell Electrodes by Automated Analytical Electron Microscopy

Haoran Yu et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles are important materials with unique properties due to their high surface area-to-volume ratio. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows direct visualization of composition and morphology of nanoparticles with atomic precision. However, traditional manual STEM measurements have limitations in sample size, while automated STEM techniques enable high-resolution characterization of nanoparticle properties at sub-micron length scales.

Effect of Commercial Gas Diffusion Layers on Catalyst Durability of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells in Varied Cathode Gas Environment

Kaustubh Khedekar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) on electrocatalyst degradation in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The results show that GDLs do not significantly affect electrocatalyst degradation, although MEAs with cracked microporous layers (MPLs) exhibit higher electrocatalyst loading loss and a lower and more heterogeneous increase in average electrocatalyst nanoparticle size.

Importance of Chemical Activation and the Effect of Low Operation Voltage on the Performance of Pt-Alloy Fuel Cell Electrocatalysts

Matija Gatalo et al.

Summary: This study systematically addresses the challenges of synthesis, activation, and stability of Pt-alloy electrocatalysts. It highlights the crucial importance of the chemical activation step and provides a simple method to distinguish the degree of activation. Additionally, the study presents clear evidence on the direct impact of the lower voltage limit on the stability of electrocatalysts.

Investigating the Particle Growth in Bimodal Pt/C Catalysts by In-Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering: Challenges in the Evaluation of Stress Test Protocol-Dependent Degradation Mechanisms

Johanna Schroeder et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different combinations of accelerated stress test (AST) protocols on a bimodal Pt/C catalyst in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) vehicle. The results reveal that under harsher AST protocols, the particle size of the larger population in the bimodal catalyst increases faster than expected, while the smaller population shows smaller increases, potentially due to electrochemical Ostwald ripening.
