Global conservation prioritization for the Orchidaceae

Pati Vitt et al.

Summary: This study presents a framework for the conservation of orchids based on their phylogenetic and taxonomic distinctiveness and rarity. The Neotropics are identified as hotspots for orchid richness, New Guinea as a hotspot for evolutionary distinctiveness, and several islands as repositories of rare and distinct orchid species. The study also highlights the urgent need for conservation actions for 278 orchid species, most of which are currently lacking conservation assessments and protection in ex-situ collections.

Madagascar's extraordinary biodiversity: Evolution, distribution, and use

Alexandre Antonelli et al.

Summary: Madagascar has a rich biota with high levels of endemicity, but the diversity and evolution of many groups remain unknown. Humid forests are centers of diversity and endemism, while other areas also have biologically important endemism with potential for new traits useful for food, medicine, and climate mitigation.

Automated conservation assessment of the orchid family with deep learning

Alexander Zizka et al.

Summary: This study conducted automated conservation assessments for 13,910 species of the orchid family using a deep neural network method, identifying 31.2% of species as possibly threatened with extinction. Priority areas for orchid conservation were identified, and the results demonstrate the important role that automated assessments play in identifying species at risk of extinction.

Expansion of the orchid genus Eulophia (Eulophiinae; Epidendroideae) to include Acrolophia, Cymbidiella, Eulophiella, Geodorum, Oeceoclades and Paralophia

Mark W. Chase et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that Eulophia is non-monophyletic in molecular phylogenetic research, suggesting a need to merge it with other genera. By examining the characteristics previously used to differentiate these genera, it is evident that a broader circumscription of Eulophia is more likely to be stable. As a result, 35 new combinations/names are necessary for the expansion of Eulophia to include these other genera.
