The effect of cyclic stress amplitude on macro-meso failure of rock under triaxial confining pressure unloading

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the influence of cyclic stress amplitude (CSA) on the macro-meso failure characteristics of deeply buried rock during the process of confining pressure unloading. Experimental results demonstrate that the deterioration of rock structure is affected by the disturbed stress amplitude. The lateral expansion caused by confining pressure unloading has a significant impact on rock volumetric deformation, damage propagation, and failure characteristics. Additionally, a damage evolution model is proposed to describe the progressive damage evolution pattern, which can be expressed using the irreversible lateral strain. CT images reveal the complexity of the crack network, which decreases with increasing CSA. Furthermore, the final volumetric deformation depends not only on the stimulated crack pattern but also on the failure modes, with specimens exhibiting pure shear failure mode showing the largest volumetric deformation.

On the fracture and energy characteristics of granite containing circular cavity under variable frequency-amplitude fatigue loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The presented studies aim to investigate the volumetric deformation and energy dissipation characteristics of granite samples with different cavity orientations under unusual cyclic loading conditions. The intersection between the maximum principal stress and cavity orientation was found to affect the strength, deformation, energy, and failure modes. Testing results revealed crack damage evolution and hole collapse using strain rate and energy rate. CT images of the failed rock provided new insights into the mesoscopic mechanism of hole spalling and crack coalescence. A transition from tensile failure to shear failure was observed as the cavity orientation increased relative to the principal stress.

Influence of bedding anisotropy on the dynamic fracture behavior of layered phyllite

X. Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of beddings and loading rates on the dynamic fracture behavior of layered phyllite using notched semicircular bending (NSCB) specimens. The results show that the fracture path depends on the loading rate, with fractures along the bedding planes dominating under static loading and ignoring the bedding planes under dynamic loading. The anisotropy of fracture toughness decreases as impact velocity increases and the dependence of dynamic fracture toughness on anisotropy is weakened due to the reduced fracture length ratio along the bedding plane induced by an increase in loading rate.

Summary: The study introduces an improved method for assessing jointing degree in rock masses, called anisotropy index. By considering the effect of joint persistency and joint spacing, the structural anisotropy of rock masses can be evaluated more accurately. The proposed method has been applied in practical cases and achieved positive results.

Laboratory-scale investigation of response characteristics of liquid-filled rock joints with different joint inclinations under dynamic loading

Summary: An auxiliary device for simulating the liquid-filled layer was developed to analyze the dynamic response characteristics of liquid-filled rock joints in the laboratory. The experimental results showed that the energy propagation coefficient and peak liquid pressure decreased with increasing joint inclination within the considered range, and smaller coefficient values were obtained for granite specimens compared with PMMA specimens. The peak pressure for granite specimens was slightly higher than that for PMMA specimens.

Summary: This study investigates the irregular columnar jointed rock mass (CJRM) using 3D printing and digital image processing techniques. The experimental and numerical results show that CJRM exhibits different failure modes and mechanical properties under different biaxial compression conditions. The peak strength increases with the increase of biaxial pressure, and the relationship curve between peak strain and biaxial pressure is approximately U-shaped.

Failure modes and excavation stability of large-scale columnar jointed rock masses containing interlayer shear weakness zones

Danchen Zhao et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of large-scale columnar jointed rock masses (CJRMs) after excavation are influenced by unloading relaxation and cutting of interlayer shear weakness zones, which complicates the stability control of the project. The study reconstructs CJRMs with interlayer shear weakness zones and conducts 3D rock failure process analysis. The results show that the columnar joints and interlayer shear weakness zones significantly affect the mechanical properties and failure modes, leading to different types of damage in the numerical models.
