A novel condition-based maintenance framework for parallel manufacturing systems based on bivariate birth/birth-death processes

Fariba Azizi et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the condition-based maintenance scheduling for a continuously monitored manufacturing system. It develops a novel framework using a tractable bivariate Birth/Birth-Death process and renewal theory to find the optimal policy. The results show that the optimal maintenance policy can be derived by minimizing the long-run expected average cost per unit time.

Optimization of condition-based maintenance for multi-state deterioration systems under random shock

Yingsai Cao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new condition-based maintenance policy for systems subject to multi-state deterioration and random shock simultaneously. The Semi-Markov process and compound Poisson process are used to model the failure processes and dependent relationships. A condition-based inspection policy is designed to capture the states where maintenance actions are needed. The optimal values of the proposed maintenance policy are obtained by Monte Carlo simulation technique.

Condition-based maintenance for a multi-component system in a dynamic operating environment

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper develops a condition-based maintenance model for a multi-component system operating under a dynamic environment. The model considers the intrinsic characteristics and common operating environment of each component, and models the environment evolution as a continuous-time Markov process. The paper also investigates the structural properties of the optimal maintenance policy and illustrates the applicability of the model through numerical examples.

Fusing Expert Knowledge with Monitoring Data for Condition Assessment of Railway Welds

Cyprien Hoelzl et al.

Summary: Monitoring information is crucial in assessing the condition of railway infrastructure, and Axle Box Accelerations (ABAs) provide valuable data on the dynamic vehicle/track interaction. However, the uncertainties in ABA measurements make it challenging to assess the condition of rail welds accurately. In this study, expert feedback is used to narrow down these uncertainties and improve the assessment of faulty welds.

Digital twins in condition-based maintenance apps: A case study for train axle bearings

Adolfo CRESPO Marquez et al.

Summary: Digital Twins (DTs) are being increasingly popular in replicating physical equipment and systems in the digital world in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. They promise improved productivity and sustainability through data integration, models, and decision-support systems. However, challenges such as conceptual basis, functional description, and established requirements need to be addressed before reaping the potential benefits of DTs for maintenance management. This paper presents a practical approach to bridge this gap by designing digital configurations for maintenance management, focused on the development of a condition-based maintenance application (CBM App) using a DT of train axle bearings.

Development of a Low-Cost System for the Accurate Measurement of Structural Vibrations

Seyedmilad Komarizadehasl et al.

Summary: Engineers currently use accelerometers for structural verification, but the high cost limits their use. A Cost Hyper-Efficient Arduino Product (CHEAP) has been developed, which accurately measures structural accelerations at a significantly lower price and with better accuracy, especially at low frequencies and low acceleration amplitudes. Tests showed that CHEAP outperformed other systems in terms of price and accuracy, with better observable resolution in Fast Fourier Transformation assessments.

Bearing Severity Fault Evaluation Using Contour Maps-Case Study

Cesar Ricardo Soto-Ocampo et al.

Summary: The increasing industrial competitiveness globally has sparked a growing interest in condition monitoring, particularly in the role of rotating machinery and the critical component of bearings. Vibration-based signal treatments are being used to identify features associated with bearing faults, which are then used to construct health indicators for evaluating current machine operating status. The use of contour maps to represent a bearing's diagnosis map, serving as a health map, shows promise in detecting and evaluating the severity of bearing damage, potentially improving the classification of bearing faults and optimizing maintenance processes.
