Fire resistance of box-shape cold-formed steel built-up columns failing in global buckling: Test, simulation and design

Jingjie Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fire resistance of box-shape cold-formed steel built-up columns (CFS-QBC) in multi-story CFS buildings through experimental research, numerical simulation, and parametric analyses. The results show that the critical temperature of the specimen decreases with the screw spacing, and the screw spacing significantly affects the deformation modes. The end fastening group has little impact on the fire resistance. The effectiveness of the composite action of the built-up section at elevated temperatures is demonstrated when the screw spacing is less than 300 mm.

Jingjie Yang et al.

Summary: Through axial compression tests, this study investigated the mechanical behavior of cold-formed steel quadruple-limb built-up box-section columns and proposed a practical design method to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of the columns. The results showed that reducing screw spacing and increasing shear stiffness can enhance the load-bearing capacity of the columns.

Local buckling of cold-formed high-strength steel hollow section columns at elevated temperatures

Xia Yan et al.

Summary: A numerical investigation was conducted to study the local buckling behavior of cold-formed SHS and RHS columns made of normal and advanced high-strength steels at elevated temperatures. The results showed that the current design method consistently captured the trend but overestimated the ultimate capacity of G450 cold-formed columns. For advanced high-strength steel grades, the finite element models yielded lower estimates of capacity compared to the current Direct Strength Method. Therefore, a modification to the method for local buckling capacity is proposed for these sections. The modified method can be used to evaluate the local buckling strength of cold-formed SHS and RHS columns made of normal and advanced high-strength steels at temperatures up to 700 degrees C.

Web crippling design of cold-formed high strength steel SHS and RHS at elevated temperatures

Hai-Ting Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the web crippling capacities of cold-formed high strength steel (CFHSS) hollow structural section members at elevated temperatures. It is found that the direct strength method (DSM) can be used for web crippling design at both elevated and ambient temperatures, and is suitable for CFHSS and stainless steel sections of various grades.

Behaviour and design of cold-formed normal- and high-strength steel SHS and RHS columns at elevated temperatures

Han Fang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the behavior of cold-formed steel columns at elevated temperatures and evaluates the applicability of existing design methods. The results show that the methods in standards are conservative for predicting the strength of cold-formed steel columns at elevated temperatures, but overestimate the cross-sectional resistance. Modified design methods are proposed to improve the accuracy of strength predictions.

Effects of nonlinear elevated temperature stress-strain characteristics on the global buckling capacities of cold-formed steel columns

M. Rokilan et al.

Summary: Losses caused by recent fire incidents are increasing the demand for proper fire safety regulations and fire protection measures around the globe. The expansion of cold-formed steel construction to mid-rise buildings has highlighted the need for accurate prediction of load bearing capacities of CFS columns in fire. This research investigates the effects of nonlinear elevated temperature stress-strain characteristics on the global buckling capacities of CFS columns and proposes new design rules for Australian and European standards.

Summary: Cold-formed steel is popular in low and mid-rise building construction, but its capacities reduce at elevated temperatures and exhibit nonlinear stress-strain characteristics different from ambient temperatures. Modified design equations considering the effects of elevated temperature nonlinear stress-strain characteristics are proposed to ensure safe predictions.

Fire design of slender cold-formed lipped channel and sigma section members with uniform temperature under compression

Flavio Arrais et al.

Summary: The paper presents a parametric study of lipped channel and sigma cross-section columns in the case of fire, considering different steel grades and cross-section slenderness values. Eurocode's simple calculation rules are concluded to be too conservative and sometimes unsafe, prompting the development of new adjustments to the current fire design rules for cold-formed steel profiles.

Numerical studies on restrained cold-formed steel column subjected to transient thermal loading

R. Senthilkumar et al.

Summary: This paper numerically studies the buckling behavior of restrained CFS channel compression members in transient state condition, calibrating the numerical model with past experimental work and conducting a parametric study. The results show that the peak and critical temperature of the column decrease with the increase in initial applied load level and width to thickness ratio of the section, and the failure mode of long columns differs from short columns under thermal loading. Buckling curves of compression members under axial load are presented based on the parametric study.
