An Overview of the Historical Retrofitting Interventions on Churches in Central Italy

Giorgia Cianchino et al.

Summary: The seismic sequence in Central Italy in 2016 provides a test benchmark for historical masonry churches and an opportunity to understand their structural behavior during earthquakes. Past earthquakes have resulted in layers of repair and retrofitting interventions, sometimes worsening the structural behavior due to incompatible elements introduced. This paper critically reviews the main interventions carried out in Central Italy's churches to assess their effectiveness in mitigating seismic vulnerability based on damage surveys after the 2016-2017 seismic sequence.

A tension stiffening model for FRCM reinforcements calibrated by means of an extended database

Francesca Nerilli et al.

Summary: In this study, the tensile performance of FRCM composites as a structural retrofitting technique is analyzed through an extensive database of experimental results. The mechanical and geometrical parameters of the constituents are found to influence the tensile response of the FRCM reinforcement. An analytical provisional formulation is proposed to reproduce the stress-strain behavior of FRCMs based on the mechanical and geometrical features of the constituents.

Stress-strain behavior and design-oriented model for FRP spiral strip-confined concrete

JinJing Liao et al.

Summary: Partial fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping is an effective technique for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns. In this study, the confinement mechanism of FRP spiral strip-wrapped concrete columns is investigated through axial compression tests. The results show that the proposed confinement effectiveness factor significantly affects the ultimate axial stress and the slope of the axial stress-strain curve. A new design-oriented stress-strain model is proposed based on the test data, which demonstrates good accuracy and robustness.

Seismic Performance of Heritage Clay Brick and Lime Mortar Masonry Structures

Ahmed Y. Elghazouli et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes recent investigations into the structural and material response of clay-brick and lime-mortar masonry elements used in heritage structures in Historic Cairo. The studies show that moisture can significantly affect the material properties, including shear and compression strengths, brick-mortar interaction parameters, and elastic and shear moduli. The extent of the moisture effects depends on the behavior and characteristics of the materials, as well as the interaction between shear and precompression stresses. The paper also considers simple and cost-effective strengthening techniques using textile-reinforced mortars to enhance the lateral performance of low-strength heritage masonry elements.

Fracture energy analysis on the fabric-matrix interface for the bond system of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM)-masonry substrate

Shuang Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the available literature, the study statistically analyzed the interface bond between FRCM and masonry substrate, including classification of interfacial failure modes, calculation of interface fracture energy, and determination of characteristic values of the ultimate bond load. The research results provide guidance for analyzing the mechanical properties of FRCM-strengthened masonry structures and improving design methods.

Recyclable LRS FRP composites for engineering structures: Current status and future opportunities

Yu-Yi Ye et al.

Summary: FRP composites are commonly used in civil engineering for strengthening existing deteriorated structures or constructing new ones. The emerging category of LRS FRP composites, with a large rupture strain, is becoming popular due to their ability to enhance structural performance and ductility. This paper reviews the basic characteristics and structural usage of LRS FRP composites, identifying further research opportunities in structural engineering applications.

FRCM/SRG strengthened masonry in diagonal compression: experimental results and analytical approach proposal

Francesca Ferretti et al.

Summary: This research investigated the in-plane shear behavior of masonry panels strengthened with FRCM or SRG in order to propose an improved analytical approach to predict the maximum capacity. Experimental outcomes highlighted the crucial role of the mortar matrix in enhancing the shear capacity of the masonry panels, leading to the development of predictive formulas considering the role of the matrix and cracked masonry.

Masonry columns confined with fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) systems: A round robin test

M. A. Aiello et al.

Summary: The use of Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites is recognized as suitable for the conservation and preservation of existing masonry buildings, improving bearing capacity and ensuring material and mechanical compatibility. Experimental results show that multi-ply strengthening schemes can significantly increase strength and ultimate axial deformation. The accuracy of design-oriented formulas for FRCM systems in different configurations has been further investigated, with varied results based on the number of layers and masonry types.

Behavior of FRP spiral strip-confined concrete under cyclic axial compression

Jun-Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: The FRP spiral strip wrapping strengthening technique is effective in enhancing both strength and deformation capacity of reinforced concrete columns. The actual confinement effectiveness factor significantly influences the stress-strain curves of FRP spiral strip-confined concrete, while the level of confinement has limited influence on reducing the plastic strain. The existing axial stress-strain model for FRP fully confined concrete cylinders under cyclic compression underestimates the plastic strain and overestimates the envelop stress, and a revised model based on test results matches well with experimental data.

Tensile Behaviour of FRCM Composites for Strengthening of Masonry Structures-An Experimental Investigation

Lukasz Hojdys et al.

Summary: This study conducted direct tensile tests on six different FRCM strengthening systems for masonry structures, focusing on mechanical parameters and tensile behavior analysis. The results indicated that the tensile behavior of FRCM composites is strongly influenced by constituent material parameters, with tensile failure of reinforcement and fiber slippage being observed as main phenomena.
