Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Laith S. Sawaqed et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Influence of Intermediate Stiffeners on Axial Capacity of Thin-Walled Built-Up Open and Closed Channel Section Columns

Beulah Gnana Ananthi Gurupatham et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the post-buckling behavior and axial capacity of thin-walled steel stiffened single-channel and back-to-back stiffened channel sections. The study found a 20% increase in axial capacity by adding stiffeners, validated by a nonlinear finite element model. A parametric study showed that design according to DSM is accurate and conservative by only 4% on average.

New performance-based plastic design and evaluation of blind bolted end-plate CFT composite frames with BRBs

Beibei Li et al.

Summary: The research proposed a novel dual structure system that combines various advantages such as fast assembly, energy dissipation, and load-carrying capacity. A plastic design procedure based on the modified energy balance was developed to improve design accuracy and simplify the process, along with derivation of formulas to avoid structural adverse yield mechanisms. The study also successfully illustrated the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed design method through nonlinear time-history analyses.

On the fire behaviour of modular floors designed with optimised cold-formed steel joists

Perampalam Gatheeshgar et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the fire performance of LSF conventional and modular floor panels made of optimised CFS joists, using Finite Element analysis. The results show that modular floor panels can withstand greater standard fire loading compared to conventional floor panels, and optimised CFS joists can also enhance fire performance.

Evaluation of the working mechanisms and simplified models of endplate-type inter-module connections

Fengtao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the load-transfer mechanisms of different components in endplate-type inter-module connections in modular steel buildings. A simplified analytical model with multiple springs is proposed based on cooperative working interactions. Tensile strength is lower than compressive strength, shear resistance is provided through contact friction initially, and shear strength calculations need to consider the contribution of axial loads.

Numerical Study of Circular Concrete Filled Steel Tubes Subjected to Pure Torsion

Khanh Ba Le et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the torsional behavior of circular concrete-filled steel tubes under pure torsion, with results showing that the compressive strength of concrete marginally improved the torsional moment capacity of the steel tubes while preventing buckling. Steel strength significantly affected the torsional moment capacity of the tubes, with an increase in yield strength leading to a 50% increase in yield torsional moment capacity. The yield torsional moment capacity had the strongest correlation with the yield moment of the tubes, indicating the importance of steel strength in determining torsional behavior.
