Investigating roughness effects on ship resistance in shallow waters

Soonseok Song et al.

Summary: Shallow waters and surface roughness have combined effects on ship resistance, which has not been studied before. This study fills this knowledge gap using Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes modelling. Results show that the total resistance coefficient increases between approximately 22% and 36% in the presence of roughness. The pressure resistance grows at a faster pace than frictional resistance and increases its relative contribution to the total when roughness is applied.

PREDICTION OF RESIDUAL RESISTANCE OF A TRIMARAN VESSEL BY USING AN ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK

Burak Yildiz

Summary: This study used an artificial neural network model to predict the resistance of a trimaran model, and developed a reliable model. The experimental data showed that the prediction using the neural network model achieved a high level of accuracy.

Hydrodynamic Performance of a Catamaran in Shallow Waters

Kayhan Ulgen et al.

Summary: The effects of limited water depth on the hydrodynamic performance of a catamaran are investigated. The simulations show that the total resistance coefficient of the catamaran can increase by over 40% at near-critical depth-dependent Froude numbers. The study also reveals the relationship between the wave system and the observed impacts on resistance, trim, and sinkage, as well as the agreement between the effect of limited water depth on Kelvin's wake angle and theory.

NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF THE TOTAL RESISTANCE OF A YACHT

Nastia Degiuli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of a bulbous bow on the total resistance of a yacht through towing tank tests and numerical simulations. It is found that the bulbous bow can reduce wave elevations and decrease total resistance by up to 7%. The study validates the use of turbulence models for predicting total resistance and highlights the significance of CFD in ship design process.

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON MANEUVERING PERFORMANCE OF SMALL WATERPLANE AREA TWIN HULL

Kun Dai et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the maneuvering performance of a SWATH ship using free running model tests and a system-based method. By implementing a 3-DOF MMG model and conducting virtual captive model tests with RANS method, the study successfully predicts maneuvering motions and investigates the impact of lateral separations on performance. The research provides valuable insights for maneuvering prediction of SWATH ships.
