Rock Fabric of Tight Sandstone and Its Influence on Irreducible Water Saturation in Eastern Ordos Basin

Mianmo Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, the irreducible water saturation and its controlling factors in the Upper Paleozoic Taiyuan and Shihezi Formations were investigated. The results showed that the saturation was related to porosity, permeability, average pore diameter, and specific surface area in both formations. Furthermore, the saturation can be further analyzed by dividing it into saturation controlled by small throat or capillary force. Overall, this study improves our understanding of the mechanism and controlling factors of water occurrence.

Rock Fabric of Lacustrine Shale and Its Influence on Residual Oil Distribution in the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation, Songliao Basin

Mianmo Meng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the rock fabric and residual oil distribution in the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. Various analysis methods were employed to determine the material composition and pore characteristics. The results showed that the organic matter was predominantly type I, with clay being the main mineral component. Nano-scale inorganic pores and micro-scale organic pores were found, with small pores containing a significant amount of residual oil. This study contributes to the understanding of rock fabric and its impact on residual oil distribution in lacustrine shale.

Salt Diapir-Driven Recycling of Gas Hydrate

Zachary F. M. Burton et al.

Summary: This study proposes and demonstrates salt movement, particularly diapirism, as a new mechanism for the recycling of marine gas hydrates (GH). The research shows that salt diapir movement can significantly increase GH volumes and saturations. The results suggest that GH systems associated with salt diapir crests are attractive targets for hydrocarbon resource exploration and scientific drilling expeditions.

Insight into Water Occurrence and Pore Size Distribution by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Marine Shale Reservoirs, Southern China

Mianmo Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water occurrence and pore size distribution in moderate-shallow and deep marine shales using various experimental methods. The results show that deep shales have abundant organic nanopores, while moderate-shallow shales have few organic pores. The high irreducible water saturation in both types of shales is attributed to the strong capillary force of the nanopores. The study provides insights into the characterization of water occurrence and pore size distribution in marine shales.

Diagenetic overprint on porosity and permeability of a combined conventional-unconventional reservoir: Insights from the Eocene pelagic limestones, Gulf of Suez, Egypt

Ahmed E. Radwan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the Radwany Formation at the October Oil Field in the Gulf of Suez, identifying various types of pores and evaluating the diagenetic processes controlling porosity evolution. The research highlights the unconventional reservoir potential of the middle and upper parts of the formation, and emphasizes the importance of understanding diagenetic controls on porosity evolution in deep-water limestones.

The 13C-depleted methane in terrigenous shale gas: A case study in the Triassic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin

Qiang Meng et al.

Summary: It has been observed that the carbon isotopic composition of shale gas in the Yanchang Formation of the Ordos Basin is lighter than predicted values, suggesting a phenomenon related to gas adsorption and the pore structure of the source rock. The research findings indicate that the δC-13(1) values of in-situ shale gas are about 10‰ lighter than predicted values, which may be attributed to the retention of pre-biogas and early thermogenic gas, as well as the preferential adsorption of early methane molecules in sites with relatively low pore radii.

The effect of thermochemical sulfate reduction of n-pentane and condensate on the chemical and isotopic compositions of gases: Implications for the organic reactant and reaction extent

Huijuan Guo et al.

Summary: Evaluating the composition of organic reactants involved in thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) reaction and understanding the chemical and isotopic compositions of gases are crucial in exploring natural sour gas reservoirs. This study investigated variations in the gas composition during high-pressure hydro-pyrolysis experiments involving TSR reaction and thermal cracking, revealing that reaction time and reactant type affected gas yields and isotopic values. The results also highlighted the significance of alkane gas dryness, δC-13 values, and the relationship between them in estimating the composition and origin of the reactants.

Hydrocarbon generation from calcium stearate: Insights from closed-system pyrolysis

Qingtao Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the extent and timing of hydrocarbon generation from calcium stearate, finding that it can produce hydrocarbons similar to type I kerogen. The results suggest that CaCO3 with low delta C-13 values may indicate hydrocarbon generation from carboxylic acid salts, and the methane generation from calcium stearate is delayed due to higher activation energies compared to n-C-18 and type I kerogen. The findings highlight the important role of carboxylic acid salts in deep oil and gas generation, and suggest that future research should focus on the abundance of such salts in carbonate formations and their depositional environments.

The Furongian to Lower Ordovician Alum Shale Formation in conventional and unconventional petroleum systems in the Baltic Basin-A review

Hans-Martin Schulz et al.

Summary: The Alum Shale Formation in northwestern Europe is proven to be a source rock for conventional oil and also has potential for shale oil and gas. It has a strong aromatic character due to uranium irradiation, impacting petroleum generation and retention. The formation includes a mixed shale oil/biogenic gas play and is an attractive gas shale candidate for gas generation and retention.
