Distribution of Gymnodinium catenatum Graham cysts and its relation to harmful algae blooms in the northern Gulf of California

Rigel Castaneda-Quezada et al.

Summary: The germination of cysts plays a crucial role in the proliferation of certain dinoflagellates, and understanding cyst abundance in sediments is important for predicting Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs). Cyst distribution in sediment is influenced by sediment characteristics and local hydrodynamics. This study investigated the abundance and distribution of Gymnodinium catenatum cysts in the northern Gulf of California, revealing heterogeneous distribution patterns with potential seedbeds for HAB development.
