Recycling rare earths: Perspectives and recent advances

Yoshiko Fujita et al.

Summary: Demand for rare-earth elements (REEs) is projected to increase significantly by 2040. Recycling offers a solution to the challenges of opening new mines, but collection and disassembly of REE-containing devices pose obstacles. However, secondary sources of REEs differ in abundance from primary sources, presenting both challenges and opportunities. Recycling REEs from e-wastes can offset costs and also enable the recovery of precious or base metals.

Strategies and options for the sustainable recovery of rare earth elements from electrical and electronic waste

C. Ramprasad et al.

Summary: Rare earth elements (REEs) are crucial elements in global high-technological appliances, and the recovery of REEs from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has gained significant attention for the sustainability of the electrical and electronic industrial markets. However, further research is needed to optimize the recovery processes, minimize environmental impacts, and establish policy and regulatory frameworks.

Recovery of rare earth elements from electronic waste by diffusion dialysis

Z. Hammache et al.

Summary: The recovery of Nd and Pr from end-of-life computer hard disk drives using diffusion dialysis shows great potential, with up to 15% of boron extraction achieved in 6 hours. The membrane selectivity between boron and REEs depends on membrane structure, water uptake ability, and surface charge, as well as the composition of the leachate. The CTA/PEI/TDDA membrane exhibited the highest B/REE selectivity factors, indicating its effectiveness in separating boron from Nd and Pr.

Recovery of rare earth elements from waste streams using membrane processes: An overview

Elkhansa Elbashier et al.

Summary: Recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) is essential due to their high costs, limited availability, toxicity, and negative environmental impacts. Membrane processes offer higher selectivity, lower energy requirements, and the potential for zero liquid discharge compared to conventional methods. However, the economic feasibility of using membrane techniques for REE recovery still needs to be thoroughly evaluated.
