Integrating BSA-Seq with RNA-Seq Reveals a Novel Fasciated Ear5 Mutant in Maize

Pengshuai Yan et al.

Summary: A single recessive mutation called fea5 was found to increase grain yield in maize. Candidate region was initially mapped and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in phytohormone signal transduction were identified. Phytohormone profiling showed increased levels of auxin, jasmonic acid, ethylene, and cytokinin, while decreased level of gibberellin in fea5. Integrating mapping and transcriptome analysis identified Zm00001d048841 as the most likely candidate gene.

Mapping of a QTL associated with sucrose content in peanut kernels using BSA-seq

Junjia Guo et al.

Summary: This study successfully mapped a quantitative trait locus (QTL), named qSUCA06, associated with sucrose content in peanut kernels. The qSUCA06 QTL, located on chromosome A06 within a 0.29-Mb genome interval, was identified using F2 and RIL populations. Candidate genes in the interval were annotated and verified, suggesting that Arahy.Y2LWD9 may be the main gene regulating sucrose content.

Estimation of heritabilities and quantitative trait loci for growth traits of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis)

Geng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the heritability of growth-related traits and identified growth-related QTL in a mixed population of 840 bighead carp. High phenotypic and genetic correlations were found between all growth-related traits. The estimated heritabilities of body weight, body height, head length, total length, and body length in seven-month-old bighead carp were obtained. Candidate genes associated with growth-related traits were identified, including paired box gene 9 and fibroblast growth factor 6b. These findings enhance our understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying growth and development in bighead carp.

Status of conventional and molecular breeding of salinity-tolerant tilapia

G. H. Yue et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is crucial for global food security. Developing species and varieties of omnivorous fish that can tolerate high salinity will enhance fish production. Certain tilapia species, such as Oreochromis mossambicus and Oreochromis aureus, are highly tolerant to salinity and have been used in aquaculture production in brackish and seawater. Different breeding methods, both conventional and molecular, have been implemented to improve the growth rate and salinity tolerance of tilapia. Advances in genomic resources and disruptive technologies provide optimism for novel breeding approaches to further enhance the production of salinity-tolerant tilapia.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of 420 Portunus trituberculatus individuals collected from seven populations in the Bohai Sea using 40 SSR loci. The results showed a low genetic diversity in the cultured population compared to the wild populations. Population structure analysis revealed the subdivision of P. trituberculatus into four subpopulations, but there was no obvious correlation between genetic structure and geographical distribution.

Deleterious, protein-altering variants in the transcriptional coregulator ZMYM3 in 27 individuals with a neurodevelopmental delay phenotype

Susan M. Hiatt et al.

Summary: Using the MatchMaker Exchange, researchers identified rare protein-altering variations in the ZMYM3 gene in a cohort of 27 individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). These variations affected protein structure and function and were associated with developmental delay, intellectual disability, behavioral abnormalities, and specific facial features. The evidence from evolutionary conservation, protein modeling, and functional experiments strongly supports ZMYM3 as an NDD-associated gene.

Identification of candidate growth-related SNPs and genes using GWAS and transcriptome analyses in leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus)

Summary: Leopard coral grouper, known for its beautiful color and high economic value, has been less studied for its growth traits. In this study, GWAS and RNA-seq were used to analyze the growth traits of 307 leopard coral groupers, resulting in the identification of significant and suggestive SNPs associated with growth traits. RNA-seq analysis of high- and low-weight groups revealed differentially expressed genes related to fatty acid metabolism and amino acid metabolism. Per2 and acadvl genes were found to play important roles in locomotor activity and metabolism. These findings provide a theoretical basis for molecular assisted breeding of leopard coral grouper.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Portunus trituberculatus in Released and Wild Populations Based on Microsatellite DNA Markers from the Yangtze Estuary

Longtao Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity and structure of Portunus trituberculatus, an economically important crab species, in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent sea areas. Our analysis showed that both artificially bred and wild populations have relatively rich genetic diversity. In addition, we found evidence of inbreeding and genetic exchange among subgroups within the populations. Overall, our findings suggest that the hatchery stock enhancements in Nantong and Zhoushan did not result in a reduction in genetic diversity for wild populations in the Yangtze Estuary in 2019.
