What coloration brings: Implications of background adaptation to oxidative stress in anurans

Tijana B. Radovanovic et al.

Summary: Urban development causes habitat destruction, affecting amphibian populations. To enhance survival, they display plasticity of body coloration. Changes in background color induce physiological stress and impact antioxidative defense mechanisms. This study highlights the costs amphibians pay to adapt to an altered environment.

Influence of daily rhythmic light spectra and intensity changes on the growth and physiological status of juvenile steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Shisheng Ma et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of different rhythmic light spectra and intensities on the growth and physiological parameters of juvenile steelhead trout. The results showed that the blue-purple-red light treatment promoted feed intake, body weight, and growth rate, and had positive effects on physiological indicators such as insulin-like growth factor 1 and thyroxine.

Effects of light on growth, feeding rate, digestion, and antioxidation in juvenile razor clams Sinonovacula constricta

Mengqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of seven light treatments on the growth and physiological parameters of juvenile Sinonovacula constricta were investigated. The results showed that yellow light had the highest growth rates, while violet and blue light had the lowest. Yellow light also promoted feeding activity and enzymatic activity related to digestion. Moreover, yellow light exhibited higher antioxidant biomarker activities and red light had higher expression levels of genes related to antioxidation and stress response. Conversely, white light had the lowest malonaldehyde level. Overall, these findings suggest that yellow light is beneficial for the growth of juvenile S. constricta.

Effects of rearing tank colour on growth indices, blood chemistry, digestive enzymes, expression of stress and growth-related genes of Asian sea bass juvenile (Lates calcarifer)

Vahid Morshedi et al.

Summary: The background colour of fibreglass tanks is an important factor influencing the growth performance and stress levels of cultured fish. The study found that a red background colour is the most suitable for rearing Asian sea bass, as it improves growth rate and protein efficiency ratio.

Color variation in signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus

Roberto Sacchi et al.

Summary: External coloration in animals is influenced by genetics, epigenetics, and color perception mechanisms. The balancing act between camouflage and communication in crustaceans has led to a variety of responses. Patterns of coloration in Pacifastacus leniusculus suggest a compromise between camouflage and communication, with potential roles for carotenoids in intraspecific communication.

Background color and cultured invertebrates ? A review

Ewen McLean

Summary: The background color has a significant impact on aquatic invertebrates, affecting their growth, feed conversion, survival, reproduction, and metamorphosis. Commercial tank-based facilities typically use green and blue colors, but using alternative colors may provide benefits in terms of production performance, animal welfare, and economic advantage.

Effect of tank colour on growth, survival, stress level, digestive enzymatic activities and body composition of snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii Lacepede) larvae

John Mapunda et al.

Summary: The growth, survival, stress levels, and digestive enzyme activities of snubnose pompano larvae vary depending on the color of the tank they are reared in. Blue tanks are recommended for early-larval-stage larvae, while white or yellow tanks are recommended for late-larval-stage larvae.

COMPARISON OF GROWTH PERFORMANCE, CAROTENOID CONTENT, AND TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE OF TWO-COLORED STRAINS OF THE RED CLAW CRAYFISH CHERAX QUADRICARINATUS

Miao Wei et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the growth performance, carotenoid content, and temperature tolerance of two crayfish strains with blue and blue-green shell colors. Blue crayfish showed higher feed intake and growth rate, but lower survival rate, while blue-green crayfish exhibited stronger tolerance to high water temperatures.

Spherical arena reveals optokinetic response tuning to stimulus location, size, and frequency across entire visual field larval zebrafish

Florian A. Dehmelt et al.

Summary: By studying the optokinetic response of immobilized zebrafish larvae to stimuli of different sizes and locations, it was found that their reaction is not solely dependent on the degree of eye yoking, but also influenced by spatial densities of photoreceptors and additional extra-retinal processing. The results indicate that the motion vision circuits in zebrafish are anisotropic, preferentially monitoring areas with putative behavioral relevance.
