Age-associated changes in electroretinography measures in companion dogs

Michele M. Salzman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between age and retinal full-field electroretinographic (ERG) measures in companion dogs, and to serve as an important translational model species for human neurologic aging. The results showed that age had significant effects on ERG peak times and amplitudes, indicating slower and reduced responses in aged dogs. The findings are important for understanding the process of neurologic aging in canine species.

A novel task of canine olfaction for use in adult and senior pet dogs

Michael Z. Khan et al.

Summary: This study explores the changes in canine olfaction by using a novel test involving hidden food treat and spontaneous behaviors. The results show that senior/geriatric dogs perform worse in the dark-phase but still above chance, while control dogs perform better. In addition, a positive correlation is found between performance in the dark-phase and cognitive decline based on an owner questionnaire.

The origins of the full-field flash electroretinogram b-wave

Yashvi Bhatt et al.

Summary: The electroretinogram (ERG) measures the electrical activity of retinal neurons and glial cells in response to a light stimulus. It is used by clinicians to diagnose various eye diseases and assess overall retinal health. The ERG consists of scotopic and photopic systems, with the a-wave and b-wave as the main components. The origins of the b-wave, a slower, positive, and prolonged wave, remain elusive.

Addition of Vision Impairment to a Life-Course Model of Potentially Modifiable Dementia Risk Factors in the US

Joshua R. Ehrlich et al.

Summary: Dementia prevention is important due to its significant impact on individuals and society. Vision impairment has been identified as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia. However, it has not been included in the dominant dementia risk factor model, potentially leading to bias in public health policy and research priorities.

Effects of gabapentin and trazodone on electroretinographic responses in clinically normal dogs

Nathaniel P. Violette et al.

Summary: This study compared the electroretinographic (ERG) responses in dogs before and after oral administration of gabapentin, trazodone, and a combination of both medications. The results showed that high doses of trazodone and the combination of gabapentin and trazodone significantly decreased a-wave and b-wave amplitudes in clinically normal dogs. However, the effects on retinal responses had little clinical importance.

Multisensory mental representation of objects in typical and Gifted Word Learner dogs

Shany Dror et al.

Summary: Little research has been conducted on the ability of dogs to integrate information obtained through different sensory modalities during object discrimination and recognition tasks. This study found that dogs rely mostly on vision and switch to using other sensory modalities, including olfaction, when searching in the dark. It also provides evidence that verbal labels evoke a multisensory mental representation of objects for gifted word learner dogs.

A Retrospective Study of Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy in Dogs (1991-2014)

Brian C. Leonard et al.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated clinical data on dogs with corneal endothelial dystrophy (CED) at the University of California Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital from 1991 to 2014. The study found certain breeds like Boston terriers, German wirehaired pointers, and Dachshunds were more commonly affected by CED, while Labradors were less common. Dogs older than 11 years and intact dogs were more likely to have CED. Many dogs with CED progress over months to years without requiring surgical intervention.

Summary: Visual impairment, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy are associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, with early diagnosis aiding in identifying at-risk individuals. As most causes of visual impairment are treatable or preventable, further investigation into dementia prevention is warranted.

Ambient light level varies with different locations and environmental conditions: Potential to impact myopia

Shashank Kishore Bhandary et al.

Summary: The study found that outdoor locations had illuminance levels 8 times higher than indoor locations, with significant variations between different outdoor locations. Among outdoor locations, open playground and translucent artificial shade had the highest illuminance levels, while illuminance was lower between buildings or under tree shade. In indoor locations, rooms with multiple large windows surpassed 1000 lux at specific time points.
