Clinical characteristics and prognosis of pneumonia-related bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit: a single-center retrospective study

Comparison of pneumonia and nonpneumonia-related Acinetobacter baumannii complex bacteremia: A single-center retrospective study

Summary: This study compared pneumonia- and non-pneumonia-related Acinetobacter baumannii complex (ABC) bacteremia and identified independent risk factors for 30-day mortality. The results showed that pneumonia-related ABC bacteremia had a higher 30-day mortality rate and was associated with hypertension, less prior tigecycline use, and more carbapenem-resistant strains. Immunosuppression, higher APACHE II score, and SOFA score were identified as independent risk factors for 30-day mortality. Additionally, the risk of death was 1.919 times higher in the pneumonia-related group.

Epidemiology and outcomes of hospital-acquired bloodstream infections in intensive care unit patients: the EUROBACT-2 international cohort study

Summary: This study investigated hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in 2600 adult patients from 333 ICUs in 52 countries. HA-BSI were frequently caused by Gram-negative, carbapenem-resistant, and difficult-to-treat pathogens. Antimicrobial resistance led to delays in adequate antimicrobial therapy, resulting in high mortality rates.

Summary: ICU-onset bloodstream infections (BSI) are a serious condition with unique pathogen and resistance profiles compared to infections acquired on ICU admission. Risk factors for ICU-onset BSI include being younger, male, Black, Hispanic, having higher comorbidity burden, certain diseases and treatments, and exposure to antibacterial and antifungal agents. Further investigation of modifiable risk factors may inform strategies for prevention and control of ICU-onset BSI.

Response to PEEP in COVID-19 ARDS patients with and without extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. A multicenter case-control computed tomography study

Summary: This study compared lung recruitability and the impact of PEEP on lung aeration in moderate and severe ARDS patients with or without ECMO. The results showed that lung recruitability was not significantly different between ECMO and non-ECMO patients, but there were substantial interindividual variations. The balance between hyperinflation and recruitment induced by PEEP increase from 5 to 15 cmH(2)O appeared favorable in almost all ECMO patients. ECMO patients had significantly lower C-BABY LUNG, regardless of lung recruitability.

This condition develops in three phases, each with unique pathogenic mechanisms. A small subset of prominent Gram-negative species are responsible for the majority of cases, with identified fitness factors demonstrating shared and unique pathogenic mechanisms.

This study investigated the use and effects of prone position during the first wave of the 2020 pandemic.
