FinnGen provides genetic insights from a well-phenotyped isolated population

Mitja Kurki et al.

Summary: Population isolates, like those in Finland, provide valuable insights for genetic research due to the concentration of deleterious alleles in low-frequency variants. FinnGen aims to study the genome and health data of 500,000 Finnish individuals, enabling the identification of new associations and the exploration of their implications for common diseases. The study identified 30 new associations and 2,733 genome-wide significant associations, highlighting the power of bottlenecked populations in uncovering disease biology.

Effect of basal metabolic rate on osteoporosis: A Mendelian randomization study

Jingyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study used Mendelian random analysis to evaluate the causal relationship between basal metabolic rate and osteoporosis. The results showed a potential causal association between basal metabolic rate and osteoporosis. However, further investigation is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.

The causal relationship between sleep traits and the risk of schizophrenia: a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization study

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: Observational studies have suggested a common association between sleep disturbances and schizophrenia, but the causal relationship remains uncertain. A two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization study was conducted to investigate the causal relation between sleep traits and schizophrenia, and the results indicated potential treatment targets for patients with schizophrenia.

Impact of nitric oxide in liver cancer microenvironment

Summary: The regulation of nitric oxide generation in the tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in hepatocellular carcinoma. The increased expression of NOS2 is associated with poor prognosis, yet the functional relevance seems to be influenced by different etiologies.

Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Katherine A. McGlynn et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is a major global health concern. While HBV and HCV remain important risk factors for HCC, efforts in vaccination and treatment are showing promise. However, the increasing prevalence of metabolic risk factors like obesity and diabetes, as well as other factors like excessive alcohol consumption, present ongoing challenges in the prevention of liver cancer.

Rheumatoid arthritis decreases risk for Parkinson's disease: a Mendelian randomization study

ChunYu Li et al.

Summary: The study found a negative genetic correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinson's disease, with an odds ratio of 0.904 suggesting that an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis is associated with a lower risk of PD. This protective effect of rheumatoid arthritis on PD was consistent across various sensitivity analyses.

Summary: The study found that childhood obesity is significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke, particularly ischemic stroke and large artery stroke. The results remained significant after various sensitivity tests, indicating the robustness of the findings.
