Complicated grief and related factors among nursing staff during the Covid-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Summary: During the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses have been greatly affected in terms of their physical and psychological well-being due to challenging working conditions. This study aimed to investigate complicated grief and its related factors among nursing staff. The findings showed that a significant proportion of participants (57.6%) were suffering from complicated grief, and factors such as gender, educational background, type of ward, nursing role, working shift, years of experience, and working in Covid-19 settings were significantly associated with nurses' grief.

Are deaths from COVID-19 associated with higher rates of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) than deaths from other causes?

Summary: This study investigates the risk factors for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that shorter time since death, deaths of siblings and others, and deaths from accidents and homicides are associated with a higher potential risk of probable PGD. On the other hand, deaths of extended family and from dementia are associated with a lower potential risk of probable PGD.

Grief experience among ICU staff with loss of family members during COVID-19 outbreak in IRAN: A qualitative study

Bereavement in the Time of COVID-19: Learning from Experiences of those Bereaved as a Result of Deaths in an Acute Hospital Setting in 2020

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to bereavement in difficult circumstances. A Bereavement Welfare Hub was established to provide telephone support and advice to relatives and carers. Data analysis identified six themes that influenced the bereavement experiences and grief status of call recipients, including support, care, communication, and death rituals. The findings provide recommendations to improve the bereavement experience, particularly during the pandemic era.

The role of funeral officiants during the pandemic is highlighted, and further research is needed to better understand the experiences and consequences of grief and bereavement during COVID-19.

Psychological Risk Factors of Functional Impairment After COVID-19 Deaths

Bereavement care in Germany: Framework for a stepped care model

However, there is currently no proposed structural framework for these services to establish qualitative standards nationwide. The British stepped care model for professionalized bereavement support is being discussed internationally, and this paper aims to adapt it to the German context to enhance bereavement care services across the country.
