Interaction of high temperature and NO2 exposure on asthma risk: In vivo evidence of inflammation and oxidative stress

Chan Lu et al.

Summary: This study conducted an in vivo experiment to explore the toxicological evidence and mechanisms of temperature (T) and NO2 interaction on allergic asthma. The experiment showed that the co-exposure to high temperature (35 degrees C) and NO2 (5 ppm) aggravated asthmatic symptoms, including airway wall thickening, lumen stenosis, goblet cell proliferation, mucus hypersecretion, and subepithelial fibrotic hyperplasia. The addition of capsazepine (CZP) alleviated these toxicological effects and biomarker levels induced by heat-NO2 interaction, indicating that oxidative stress and TRPV1 expression may be primarily responsible for the toxicity of heat-NO2-induced asthma.

Short-term Exposure to Air Pollution and Attributable Risk of Kidney Diseases A Nationwide Time-series Study

Whanhee Lee et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with reduced kidney function, and short-term exposure can aggravate kidney disease and increase the burden on emergency rooms. This study provides quantitative estimates of the impact of air pollution on emergency room visits and supports stricter air quality standards to protect kidney patients.

Particulate matter of air pollution may increase risk of kidney failure in IgA nephropathy

Chengwen Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure on the progression of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The results showed that PM2.5 is an independent risk factor for kidney failure in patients with IgAN, and its severity is correlated with regional kidney failure burden.

Association between traffic-related air pollution and hospital readmissions for rheumatoid arthritis in Hefei, China: A time-series study

Qian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the short-term association between traffic-related air pollutants and hospital readmissions for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Hefei, China. Results showed that high-concentration PM2.5 and NO2 were associated with increased risk of RA readmissions, with females, the elderly, and cold seasons being more vulnerable. Protective measures should be taken to reduce recurrence risk, especially in these vulnerable populations and during cold seasons.

Association of hospital admission for bronchiectasis with air pollution: A province-wide time-series study in southern China

Zihui Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that acute fluctuations of air pollution may increase the risk of hospital admission for bronchiectasis, especially for patients complicated with lower respiratory infection. Patients aged >= 65 years, and female patients appeared to be particularly susceptible to the effects of air pollution.

Summary: This study found a significant association between air pollutants and URTI clinic visits among college students in Wuhan, China. Gaseous pollutants like SO2 and NO2 had stronger negative impacts on health compared to solid pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10. Males were more vulnerable to PM10 and O-3, while females were more vulnerable to SO2 and NO2 exposure.

Sirtuins and Renal Oxidative Stress

Yoshio Ogura et al.

Summary: Renal failure is a growing global health problem, and understanding the basic mechanisms of kidney disease is crucial for improving clinical outcomes. Aging is a risk factor for the development and progression of kidney disease, with cells experiencing oxidative stress and kidney damage as they age. Calorie restriction is recognized for promoting longevity and reducing oxidative stress, with sirtuins playing a key role in regulating antioxidants and reducing oxidative stress in kidney disease.
