Cancer risk assessment of exposure to asbestos during old building demolition

Reza Zandavar Javad Hesari et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the concentration of asbestos exposure and estimate its cancer risk among old building demolition workers. The presence of asbestos in air samples collected from the demolition site was confirmed, with some workers being exposed to levels higher than the occupational exposure limit. The results of cancer risk estimation showed that the risk of cancer was considerable among the workers. Consequently, the implementation of asbestos risk management measures such as isolation of asbestos-containing materials, personal protective equipment, and the use of wet method during demolition could minimize asbestos exposure.

ASBESTOS DANGER IN CENTRAL EUROPE IS NOT YET OVER - THE SITUATION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Miroslav Urban et al.

Summary: Czech Republic has classified asbestos as a known human carcinogen since 1984, with the manufacture and distribution of asbestos materials being banned since 1997. Despite the ban, there is still a risk of occupational exposure during the demolition and reconstruction of buildings where asbestos has been used. Additionally, a new risk has emerged from the quarrying of asbestos-containing aggregates.
