Prevalence of colistin-resistant mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli isolated from children patients with diarrhoea in Shanghai, 2016-2021

Jun Feng et al.

Summary: This study reports the prevalence of the mcr-1 colistin resistance gene and the genetic characteristics of related plasmids in Escherichia coli isolates from diarrheal patients in Shanghai. The results showed that only 0.28% of the strains carried the mcr-1 gene, and one strain also had multiple other resistance genes. The findings highlight the need for increased surveillance of colistin resistance among children in Shanghai and efforts to prevent further dissemination of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in clinically relevant Gram-negative bacterial pathogens.

NDM-5-Producing Escherichia coli Co-Harboring mcr-1 Gene in Companion Animals in China

Xu Kuang et al.

Summary: This study identifies NDM-5-producing E. coli in companion animals in China, and suggests that such resistant pathogens can be transmitted from animals to humans, posing a risk to clinical therapy. The co-transfer of resistance to both carbapenem and colistin, two important antibiotics, could seriously compromise their effectiveness. IncX3-type plasmids play a key role in the spread of bla(NDM-5) in these bacteria.

Antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella Indiana from retail chickens in China and emergence of an mcr-1-harboring isolate with concurrent resistance to ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, and colistin

Yujie Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance profiles and related resistance mechanisms of ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant Salmonella enterica serotype Indiana isolated from retail chicken samples in China. The study found that these isolates exhibited multidrug-resistant phenotypes and carried various antimicrobial resistance genes, including plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes. Additionally, a strain harboring the mcr-1 gene, which confers resistance to colistin, was identified. The findings highlight the urgent need for surveillance and a One Health strategy to control the emergence and dissemination of S. Indiana along the food chain.

Xiucai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the main mechanisms of carbapenem and colistin co-resistance in E. coli strains are encoded by blaNDM and mcr1.1 genes, while mgrB mutations also contribute to colistin resistance. Additionally, the study identifies the coexistence of blaNDM-5, blaCTX-M-65, blaOXA-10, blaTEM-1, and mcr1.1 genes in a ST156 E. coli strain, as well as identifies a ST457 E. coli strain carrying blaTEM-1, blaNDM-9, blaCTX-M-199, and mcr1.1 gene.

Plasmid-Determined Colistin Resistance in the North African Countries: A Systematic Review

Abdelaziz Touati et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic review was conducted to update information on plasmid-mediated colistin resistance genes in North African countries. The review identified different frequencies of mcr-positive strains in various samples, with Escherichia coli as the predominant species showing high resistance to certain antibiotics. The IncHI2 plasmids were highlighted as likely key vectors responsible for disseminating mcr genes in these countries, emphasizing the need for preventative actions to curb their spread through surveillance programs and restrictions on colistin use.

Summary: This study confirmed the presence of plasmid mediated mcr-1 gene in multidrug resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates in Pakistan. The mcr-1 positive isolates showed high sequence similarity and had minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 4 to 16 μg/ml. Summary: The study reveals the emergence opportunities and fate in E. coli of plasmids carrying mcr-1 and tet(X4), indicating the risk of forming novel hybrid plasmids positive for both critical resistance genes that should be constantly monitored globally. This highlights the importance of antimicrobials in the evolution and diversity of plasmids coharboring mcr-1 and tet(X4) and emphasizes the need to strengthen the surveillance of the occurrence of multidrug-resistant plasmids carrying mcr-1 and tet(X4) in order to prevent the emergence of plasmids coharboring both genes.
