Assessment Protocol to Evaluate the Degree of Conservation of Habitats of Community Interest: A Case Study for the 5220* HCI in the Westernmost Localities of Europe

Noelia Hidalgo-Triana et al.

Summary: The westernmost European nucleus of the 5220* Habitat of Community Interest (HCI) is located in the province of Malaga (Andalusia). This area is characterized by the presence of scrublands of Gymnosporia senegalensis subsp. europaea, a relict species in Europe. Three isolated nuclei of the 5220* HCI exist in Malaga-Rincon de la Victoria, Torremolinos, and Pizarra. The objectives of the study were to map the habitat in detail, evaluate its degree of conservation, and identify its evolution and fragmentation over time. The results showed good to excellent conservation values, with the highest reduction in conservation observed in Torremolinos and Malaga-Rincon de la Victoria.

The Invasion of Alien Populations of Solanum elaeagnifolium in Two Mediterranean Habitats Modifies the Soil Communities in Different Ways

Maria Karmezi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the alien plant Solanum elaeagnifolium invasion on soil microbial and nematode communities in Mediterranean pines and maquis. The results showed that most variables were influenced by habitat type, while the effect of S. elaeagnifolium differed in each habitat. It was found that the invasion of S. elaeagnifolium had a negative effect on organic content and microbial biomass in pines, while in maquis, it had a positive effect on them.

Alien flora of Oman: invasion status, taxonomic composition, habitats, origin, and pathways of introduction

Annette Patzelt et al.

Summary: This study presents the first inventory and status assessment of alien flora in Oman, providing comprehensive information on taxonomic composition, invasion status, habitat characteristics, and pathways of introduction. The results show that out of the 111 reported alien species, 34 are casuals, 77 are naturalized, and 7 are considered invasive. The study also reveals differences in alien species composition across different regions of Oman and analyzes the drivers of plant invasions. The knowledge base provided by this inventory is essential for developing a national management strategy for alien vascular plants in Oman.

Plant functional traits best explain invasive species? performance within a dynamic ecosystem-A review

Priya Kaushik et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species pose a significant threat to plant biodiversity and are considered one of the largest threats to biodiversity, second only to habitat loss. Their success is attributed to differences in functional traits compared to native and less successful alien species. Functional traits are important attributes for describing the success of invasive species compared to native species and are relevant to conservation biology and ecosystem management.

Alien plant invasions in Mediterranean habitats: an assessment for Sicily

Riccardo Guarino et al.

Summary: The study compared the levels of vascular plant invasion in different habitats and plant communities of Sicily, revealing that annual and woody species dominate the alien flora in the region, with alien species having longer flowering periods than native species. Different habitats varied significantly in their level of invasion by alien species, with most habitats having few or no aliens present, except for specific coastal areas, riverbeds, and synanthropic habitats. The number of alien species present in a habitat does not necessarily correspond to the severity of the impact of invasion in that habitat.

Dimensions of invasiveness: Links between local abundance, geographic range size, and habitat breadth in Europe's alien and native floras

Trevor S. Fristoe et al.

Summary: Understanding the factors driving success for alien species is important for predicting future invasions. Recent advancements in conceptual frameworks suggest that invasive species can be defined by their local abundance, geographic range size, and habitat breadth. By analyzing data from over one million vegetation plots in Europe, researchers found a continuum of invasiveness dimensions ranging from poor invaders to super invaders, with early introduction dates and species from other continents being associated with higher success. Furthermore, unique patterns of success were identified in specific habitats and traits, showing the importance of considering invasiveness within a multidimensional framework.

Economic costs of invasive alien species in the Mediterranean basin

Melina Kourantidou et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species (IAS) in the Mediterranean basin have led to significant economic costs, mainly driven by damages and losses from invasions rather than management expenditure. Costs were predominantly attributed to a few countries, primarily France, Spain, Italy, and Libya. The study highlights the need for improved research and data collection to understand the full extent of invasion costs in the region.
