Seasonal and Morphological Controls on Nitrate Retention in Arctic Deltas

Deon Knights et al.

Summary: The lack of field observations in Arctic deltas limits the estimation of nitrate loading to the Arctic Ocean due to logistical constraints. To overcome this, a remote sensing framework was used to estimate nitrate retention in Arctic deltas, by coupling hydrological and biogeochemical process models at the network scale. Binary masks of delta channels were used to simulate flow direction and magnitude, and models were parameterized using historical and seasonal observations. Simulated nitrate retention ranged from 2.9% to 15% of the incoming load, with the highest retention rates during winter and the lowest during spring conditions. Under future climate scenarios, retention rates are expected to decrease by approximately 1%-10%.

Diatoms of Small Water Bodies as Bioindicators in the Assessment of Climatic and Anthropogenic Impacts on the Coast of Tiksi Bay, Russian Arctic

Sophia Barinova et al.

Summary: A total of 385 species of diatoms were identified in the phytoplankton of 14 small Arctic tundra water bodies in the vicinity of Tiksi Bay, with each lake having a unique species composition. The ecological preferences of diatom species in the studied water bodies were determined for more than 90% of the list. Indicator characteristics showed a certain response of the species composition of phytoplankton to changes in salinity and organic pollution.

Influence of the Active Layer Thickness of Permafrost in Eastern Siberia on the River Discharge of Nutrients into the Arctic Ocean

Olga I. Gabysheva et al.

Summary: Large rivers serve as important links between continents and oceans, impacting global marine biogeochemistry. This study investigates the relationship between the concentration of nutrients in Eastern Siberian rivers and the active layer thickness of permafrost. Results show that rivers with a deeper active layer have higher concentrations of nutrients, while Arctic rivers have lower nutrient levels. Soil permeability also affects nutrient discharge into rivers. The findings suggest that with the projected deepening of the active layer due to global climate change, there may be an increase in nutrient supply to the Arctic Ocean.

Gomphosphenia vallei (Bacillariophyta), a new diatom species from a stream in the Reserve Naturelle Nationale de la Vallee de Chaudefour, Massif Central (France)

Aude Beauger et al.

Summary: A new species of Gomphosphenia was discovered in the diatom survey in the Vault de Chaudefour Nature Reserve in the Massif Central, France. This small-sized species has distinctive characteristics and seems to inhabit headwater streams.

The Indicator Role of Algae in Assessing the Organic Pollution in the Lena River Delta, the Russian Arctic

Viktor Gabyshev et al.

Summary: The Lena River delta is one of the largest in the world and is located beyond the Arctic Circle in a permafrost zone. The development of oil industries in the Russian Arctic sector may cause organic water pollution in the delta. A study on the species composition of algae in the delta suggests that hydrological conditions play a significant role in shaping the spatial structure of algal communities.

Assessment of Potential Phytoplankton Transformations of Large Rivers of Eastern Siberia in Response to Global Climate Change

V. A. Gabyshev

Summary: The predictive modeling of phytoplankton transformation in large East Siberian rivers under global climate changes suggested potential increases in phytoplankton abundance, invasive species, decrease in cell size, and reduction in monotypic taxa. The rivers' aquatic ecosystems have been minimally impacted, allowing for evaluation of climate change effects on phytoplankton rather than local anthropogenic factors.

Diversity Variation of Silica-Scaled Chrysophytes Related to Differences in Physicochemical Variables in Estuaries of Rivers in an Arctic Watershed

Anna Bessudova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the taxonomic diversity of silica-scaled chrysophytes in the Arctic waters of Yakutia in the context of global climate change. The study identified a high species richness and observed eight new species in the region. The research also found that water transparency, temperature, and magnesium ion concentration influence the species composition of silica-scaled chrysophytes in the area.
