Desiccation cracking in clay-bottom ash mixtures: insights from crack image analysis and digital image correlation

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of using bottom ash admixtures to reduce soil cracking. Experimental results show that adding bottom ash significantly reduces moisture loss and the development of cracking in clay. In addition, bottom ash maintains the structural integrity of the soil and slows down crack formation. These findings are important for understanding soil desiccation cracking and exploring the recycled usage of bottom ash for soil improvement.

A note on the instability and pattern formation of shrinkage cracks in viscoplastic soils

Manolis Veveakis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conditions and formation of cracks in saturated viscoplastic soils under isotropic loading, obtaining a 2D extension of the Cnoidal Waves equations and identifying the characteristic spacing between cracks through numerical solutions. Patterns of triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal cracks can tessellate the domain, with the hexagonal pattern being energetically favored.

Desiccation cracking of soils: A review of investigation approaches, underlying mechanisms, and influencing factors

Chao-Sheng Tang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the development and characterization methods of desiccation cracking, as well as the behaviors of soil cracking. It summarizes experimental approaches, theoretical frameworks, and crack dynamics in desiccating soils. Major influencing factors of soil cracking are discussed, along with potential research directions.
