Mix design and performance of lightweight ultra high-performance concrete

Jian-Xin Lu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to design a novel lightweight ultra high-performance concrete (L-UHPC) by introducing lightweight materials and using a mathematical optimization approach. The designed L-UHPC showed comparable or even superior performance to normal-weight UHPC and high-performance cement mortar.

Incorporation of liquid phase into solid particle packing model for precise design of low water/binder cement-based composites (LW/B-CC) : Modelling and experiments

Dingqiang Fan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel method for the precise mixture design of low water/binder cement-based composites (LW/B-CC) by incorporating the liquid phase into a solid particle packing model. The method is validated using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and the superior performance of the newly designed UHPC is evaluated in terms of its micro-meso-macro properties. The experimental results show that adding superplasticizer (SP) can significantly increase the water film thickness (WFT) in UHPC and the newly designed UHPC exhibits advanced pore structure and excellent compressive strength.

Mechanical performances and microstructures of metakaolin contained UHPC matrix under steam curing conditions

Zongyun Mo et al.

Summary: This study found that steam curing significantly enhances the early compressive strength of UHPC matrix, but restrains late strength growth. Higher curing temperature facilitates a higher reaction degree of MK with cement, but decreases cement hydration degree. In terms of pore structure, the influence of steam curing on MK mixture is not significant.

Elephant skin formation on UHPC surface: Effects of climatic condition and blast furnace slag content

Caglar Yalcinkaya et al.

Summary: The study found that fresh UHPC forms dense skin under drying conditions, affecting macro-pore structure and reducing surface aesthetics. Ground granulated blast furnace slag replacement can reduce superplasticizer demand but does not completely eliminate the elephant skin issue.

A new development of eco-friendly Ultra-High performance concrete (UHPC): Towards efficient steel slag application and multi-objective optimization

Dingqiang Fan et al.

Summary: This paper presents an innovative method for developing eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) using DOD design model and numerical optimization, with steel slag powder enhancing workability and impacting early compressive strength. Experimental evaluation shows that the chloride penetration resistance of UHPC decreases with increased SSP content, yet remains lower than ordinary concrete.

Valorization of converter steel slag into eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete by ambient CO2 pre-treatment

Gang Liu et al.

Summary: Converter steel slag, a by-product of the steel-making process, shows high reactivity in a CO2 rich environment. This study demonstrates that modified converter steel slag after CO2 pretreatment can be used as a supplementary cementitious material in eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete, achieving higher compressive strength and improving microstructure. The carbonation process modifies the physical and chemical properties of slag particles, enhancing cement hydration and reducing leaching of potentially hazardous elements in UHPC mixtures.
