Preparation of biomimetic functionalized hierarchical bamboo fibers for reinforcing plant protein-based adhesives

Xiaorong Liu et al.

Summary: Bioinspired functionalized hierarchical fibers were constructed by anchoring catechol-modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) onto bamboo fiber surfaces to enhance the performance of soybean meal-based adhesives. The fibers with hierarchical structures can create a material gradient and decrease stress concentration, thus enhancing energy dissipation. The wet/dry shear strengths of the resulting adhesives were significantly increased by 96.87% and 66.46%.

Efficient simulation of non-stationary non-homogeneous wind field: Fusion of multi-dimensional interpolation and NUFFT

Tianyou Tao et al.

Summary: An efficient approach is developed for the simulation of non-stationary non-homogeneous wind field, using multi-dimensional interpolation to decouple evolutionary spectra and non-uniform FFT to expedite the simulation. The approach establishes a surrogate model for the 3D evolutionary spectrum and applies NUFFT to speed up the summation of trigonometric functions. The enhanced approach avoids unnecessary simulation points and is almost independent of the number of simulation points.

Application of natural fibres in cement concrete: A critical review

Hussein M. Hamada et al.

Summary: Sustainability of building materials can be achieved through the use of natural fibres, which can reduce environmental threats in cement-based materials. However, the moisture absorption and hydrophilic behavior of natural fibres can weaken their bonding with the concrete matrix, affecting the overall performance of concrete. Physical and chemical treatments can enhance the aging resistance of natural fibres, while optimizing binder components and curing regimes can delay their degradation. The porous nature and weak interface of natural fibres can increase the permeability of concrete, but using them in fabric production or extracting cellulose nanocrystals/nanofibres can enhance their effectiveness.

Natural fiber-reinforced shotcrete mixture: Quantitative assessment of the impact of fiber on fresh and plastic shrinkage cracking properties

Seunghak Choi et al.

Summary: The plastic stage of early-age shotcrete life is crucial for durability. Utilizing natural fibers is an effective strategy to extend the service life and mitigate plastic cracking. A statistical model (multiple regression model) was used to analyze the impact of fiber type, length, and content on mixture optimization. The results demonstrate that fiber integration creates a spatial network structure, greatly enhancing the shear resistance of the material. This fibrous network prevents plastic cracking by providing initial mechanical strength and a strong matrix to withstand shrinkage stress. Thus, a rheological model was proposed to characterize fiber mixtures with improved tensile strain capacity through viscosity and yield stress development.

Impact resistance of flax FRP fully wrapped coconut fibre reinforced concrete beams and shear contribution of FRP

Wenjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of fully wrapped coconut fiber reinforced concrete (CFRC) beams reinforced with flax fiber reinforced polymer (FFRP) and the contribution of FRP to shear strength under impact loadings. Both repeated and single drop-weight tests were carried out on beams with three different FFRP wrapping thicknesses. The results showed that the impact resistance of fully FFRP wrapped beams increased nonlinearly with thickness. The damage mechanism of concrete beams and the shear contribution of FFRP in CFRC were also influenced by the FRP thicknesses. The proposed method of calculating the shear contribution of FFRP fit well with experimental values.

Efficient buffeting analysis of long-span bridges under non-stationary winds: A 2D interpolation enhanced approach

Tianyou Tao et al.

Summary: The buffeting analysis of long-span bridges under non-stationary winds is crucial but traditional approaches are computationally inefficient. This study proposes an enhanced approach using 2D interpolation for efficient analysis of non-stationary buffeting responses. The approach significantly reduces computational resources and efforts by solving the governing equations only at limited interpolation knots. Parametric analysis and case studies verify its effectiveness in simulating non-stationary buffeting responses of long-span bridges with high efficiency and accuracy.

Research on dynamic splitting damage characteristics and constitutive model of basalt fiber reinforced concrete based on acoustic emission

Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of loading rate and fiber content on the mechanical properties and acoustic emission characteristics of basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) under dynamic splitting tests. The results showed that the tensile strength is enhanced with increasing loading rate, and adding basalt fibers also has a similar effect. Optimal fiber contents were found to be 0.1% and 0.15%. Additionally, it was observed that loading rate and fiber content significantly impact the AE characteristics, and the modified constitutive model successfully described the mechanics behavior of BFRC under dynamic splitting loads.

The addition of wool fibers reduces the slump values and compressive strength of the concrete, but modified wool fiber (MWF) concrete achieves compressive strength values of more than 30 MPa after a 90-day curing period. Moreover, adding fibers with volume fractions of up to 2% reduces the sorptivity rate and chloride penetration of the concrete.
