Comprehensive modification of emulsified asphalt on improving mechanical properties of crumb rubber concrete

Qiang Lin et al.

Summary: This paper presents the surface modification of crumb rubber concrete (CRC) by emulsified asphalt (EA). The effect of different EA contents on the mechanical properties of CRC was studied. The tests show that CRC modified by EA demonstrates better mechanical properties than NaOH modification, including higher compressive and splitting tensile strength, more significant strain rate sensitivity, and lower elastic and bending moduli. The better modified effects can be attributed to the improved interfacial bonding and reduced stress concentrations.

Mahsa Rezayeenik et al.

Summary: In this study, a cerium vanadate/reduced graphene oxide (CeVO4/rGO) nanocomposite was synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method to improve hydrogen storage efficiency. The rod-like CeVO4 nanoparticles were dispersed on the graphene plates and the addition of graphene enhanced the synergistic effect between the layers, resulting in increased hydrogen storage capacity. The synthesized nanocomposite exhibited a high electrochemical storage capacity of approximately 5430 mAh/g, which is significant compared to other nanostructures used.

Water absorption behavior of hydrophobized concrete using silane emulsion as admixture

Chaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The influences of silane emulsion as a hydrophobic agent on the pore structure, compressive strength, and water absorption behavior of hardened cement paste were studied. The results showed that silane slightly inhibited cement hydration and reduced the compressive strength of concrete. However, silane significantly decreased the water sorptivity of concrete due to the hydrophobization of capillary walls in hardened cement paste.

Mechanical, Microstructural and Drying Shrinkage Properties of NaOH-Pretreated Crumb Rubber Concrete: RSM-Based Modeling and Optimization

Pretta Malaysia Appana et al.

Summary: The weak bond between crumb rubber and hardened cement paste is a primary cause of the low mechanical properties of rubberized concrete. This study aimed to develop models for predicting the mechanical and shrinkage properties of NaOH-pretreated crumb rubber concrete (NaOH-CRC) and conducted multi-objective optimization. The results showed that higher crumb rubber replacements led to lower mechanical strengths and higher shrinkage, but the strength loss and shrinkage significantly reduced after the pretreatment. The developed models had high R-2 values and the optimization yielded favorable NaOH and crumb rubber levels.

Lei Tian et al.

Summary: A novel hydrophobic self-compacting rubberized mortar (HSCRM) was developed using a cost-effective silane-based hydrophobic agent and waste tire rubber particles, which showed increased durability, corrosion resistance, toughness, and ductility compared to traditional self-compacting mortar (SCM). The HSCRM exhibited integral overhydrophobicity with a static contact angle larger than 120 degrees, and significantly reduced water absorption and improved surface deicing process. Though slightly lower in strength compared to SCM, the HSCRM showed enhanced performance in various aspects.
