Development and characterization of mycelium bio-composites by utilization of different agricultural residual byproducts

Liucheng Peng et al.

Summary: Mycelium bio-composites were developed by incubating Pleurotus ostreatus fungi on different agricultural residual byproducts. The composites derived from bagasse had the densest hypha and the largest diameter, attributed to the presence of cellulose. The bagasse-derived composite showed the best comprehensive properties, comparable to EPS packaging material, making mycelium material a good alternative for packaging applications.

Investigation of mechanical and thermal properties of new type bio-composites containing camelina

Mehmet Nuri Kolak et al.

Summary: Increasing urbanization has made lightweight construction materials with low thermal conductivity important. One of these materials, bio-composite materials made from agricultural wastes, has gained importance. This study aimed to develop new lightweight bio-composites using camelina stalks. Different mixtures were created using unsaturated polyester resin as the binder, and the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the bio-composites were examined. The results showed that as the ratio of camelina stalks increased, thermal conductivity, unit weight, compressive strength, and ultrasonic pulse velocity decreased.

Thermal insulation panels for buildings using recycled cardboard: Experimental characterization and optimum selection

Jemi Merrin Mathews et al.

Summary: Buildings are a major contributor to global energy consumption. Thermal insulation is a passive strategy that reduces heating and cooling loads to achieve energy efficiency. This study utilizes recycled cardboard aggregates and different biodegradable binders (corn starch, lime, clay) to fabricate thermal insulation panels, and characterizes their physical, thermal, mechanical, and microstructural properties. The results demonstrate that the fabricated panels have good thermal conductivity, sufficient compressive and flexural strength, and strong adhesion between the cardboard aggregates and cornstarch binder. These panels can be used as effective thermal insulation materials in buildings.

Development of a new lightweight gypsum composite: Effect of mixed treatment of barley straws with hot water and bio-based phase change material on the thermo-mechanical properties

Khadidja Kehli et al.

Summary: Regenerative construction enables the development of regenerative composites for thermal rehabilitation of outside walls. The studied composite is gypsum lightened by barley straws treated with hot water (BS.HW) and then treated with palm oil (PO). The aim is to improve the thermophysical properties of the composite. The results show that the new lightweight gypsum composite with a ratio of 2.6:1 of (PO:BS.HW.3%) has improved thermal diffusivity by reducing 12.1% compared to the basic composition. The microstructural analysis results are also promising, especially concerning good chemical stability.

Mechanical properties prediction of composite laminate with FEA and machine learning coupled method

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: A method combining finite element analysis (FEA) and machine learning is studied to predict mechanical properties of composite laminates, by establishing FEA models and using artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) models to learn virtual samples, predicting mechanical properties. The predicted results are consistent with FEA values, demonstrating the effectiveness of this method.

Study of toughness and thermal properties of bio-composite reinforced with diss fibers for use as an insulating material

Asma Sellami et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performances of a new material composed of cement binder and natural vegetable fibers for lightweight material with excellent thermal insulation. The addition of vegetable fibers increases the porosity of the composite, reducing its density but enhancing toughness. The composites exhibit improved thermal properties with low thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and effusivity.

An investigation of thermal conductivity and sound absorption from binderless panels made of oil palm wood as bio-insulation materials

Indra Mawardi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the thermal and sound characteristics of binderless panels made from oil palm wood as insulation materials. The results show that particle size has a significant impact on the characteristics of the binderless panels, while pressing times do not. Panels with larger particles have better thermal and sound resistance but lower density, water resistance, and flexural strength.
