Valorization of granadilla waste (Passiflora ligularis, Juss.) by sequential green extraction processes based on pressurized fluids to obtain bioactive compounds

Renata Vardanega et al.

Summary: The development of food waste biorefineries based on clean technologies aims to reduce food waste and its impact on climate change. This study developed a sequential extraction process using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) to recover valuable compounds from granadilla seeds. The optimized SFE conditions yielded a PUFA-rich oil, while PLE at 70°C and 10 MPa with 75% EtOH was more efficient in extracting phenolic compounds from the defatted seeds compared to ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE).

Contributions of supercritical fluid extraction to sustainable development goal 9 in South America: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure

Renata Vardanega et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been increased interest in developing modular, environmentally friendly, and sustainable production processes that reuse, recycle, and reduce raw materials. Supercritical fluids extraction (SFE) is emerging as a promising technology that can contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs). This review explores the use of SFE to recover bioactive compounds from biobased products and byproducts, with a focus on the potential applications in South America to help achieve the SDGs. While data on economic feasibility and environmental impact is limited, literature suggests that Brazil has the greatest potential for obtaining various products using SFE and achieving SDG 9, although dependence on imported equipment remains a major bottleneck.

Green ultrasound and microwave extraction of carotenoids from passion fruit peel using vegetable oils as a solvent: Optimization, comparison, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Hemanta Chutia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of green processes on the extractability of carotenoids from passion fruit peel waste, finding that ultrasonication assisted extraction (UAE) was more efficient than microwave assisted extraction (MAE). UAE treated olive oil had higher carotenoids and phenolic content, making it a promising method for industrial implementation.
