Consortium neuroscience of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder: The ENIGMA adventure

Martine Hoogman et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging has been extensively used to study brain structure and function in individuals with ADHD and ASD. However, there have been limitations in the current literature, such as small sample sizes and heterogeneous methods. To address these limitations, the ENIGMA-ADHD and ENIGMA-ASD working groups were established to collaborate on large-scale neuroimaging projects. The findings so far have shown overlap and unique differences in cortical structures between ASD and ADHD. Ongoing work is exploring other research questions.

Multimodal Neuroimaging in Rett Syndrome With MECP2 Mutation

Yu Kong et al.

Summary: This article reviews neuroimaging studies on Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive, social, and physical impairments. The studies reveal abnormal brain structure and function in individuals with Rett syndrome and provide insights into the complex interplay between genes, neurotransmitter pathway abnormalities, behavioral abnormalities, and clinical severity.

Small Nucleus Accumbens and Large Cerebral Ventricles in Infants and Toddlers Prior to Receiving Diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Tadashi Shiohama et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify neuroimaging biomarkers for early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Surface- and voxel-based brain morphometry was evaluated in participants under 3 years old who were later diagnosed with ASD. The findings suggest that the volume of the nucleus accumbens and cerebral ventricles could serve as MRI-based early biomarkers to predict the emergence of ASD.

Brain charts for the human lifespan

R. A. I. Bethlehem et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging has become a widely used tool in brain research, but there is currently a lack of reference standards to quantify individual differences over time. In this study, researchers created an open resource that benchmarks brain morphology using a large dataset of MRI scans. The brain charts identified neurodevelopmental milestones and showed high individual stability and robustness to technical and methodological differences.

Neural markers of familial risk for depression - A systematic review

Anna Nazarova et al.

Summary: Structural and functional brain alterations are found in adults with depression, and this study aims to investigate whether asymptomatic offspring at high familial risk exhibit similar changes. The results show consistent findings of reduced cortical thickness, decreased white matter integrity, and altered striatal reward processing in high-risk offspring across different ages. These alterations are also present in adults with depression, indicating the presence of neural markers of familial risk for depression.

Cortical thickness abnormalities in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder revealed by structural magnetic resonance imaging: Newborns to young adults

Jacob Levman et al.

Summary: Using statistical and computational methods, brain imaging studies examined the differences in cortical thickness and variability between ADHD patients and neurotypical controls, revealing potential areas linked with known symptoms of ADHD. Preliminary validation on the ADHD200 dataset confirmed lower cortical thickness variability and increased mean thicknesses in ADHD subjects compared to controls.

Spatio-temporal correlates of gene expression and cortical morphology across lifespan and aging

Anqi Qiu et al.

Summary: Evidence from neuroimaging and genetic studies suggests that brain aging mirrors development, but it is unclear whether mechanisms connecting brain development and aging can delay or reverse aging. This study identified genes associated with cortical volumes across the lifespan, mainly in astrocytes, with up-regulation during development and down-regulation during aging. These genes are involved in fundamental astrocytic functions and signaling pathways related to aging.

Mouse and human share conserved transcriptional programs for interneuron development

Yingchao Shi et al.

Summary: Genetic variation contributes to susceptibility to neurodevelopmental disorders by impacting the development of specific cell types, such as cortical and striatal GABAergic neurons. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, this study characterized the diversity of cell emergence in the human ganglionic eminences, where these neurons are generated. The findings demonstrate a regulatory logic controlling the specification, migration, and differentiation of GABAergic neurons in the human telencephalon that is evolutionarily conserved.
