Green synthesis of cow milk-derived carbon quantum dots and application for Fe3+ detection

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: A fluorescent probe based on cow milk-derived carbon quantum dots (CMCQDs) was synthesized and exhibited blue fluorescence, small particle size, and excellent stability. It demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity in detecting ferric ions (Fe3+) in tap water, with a LOD of 0.6 μmol/L in the range of 0.1-20 μmol/L (R-2 = 0.9911). The quenching effect of CMCQDs by Fe3+ is attributed to the unique chelation or coordination between Fe3+ and surface functional groups of CMCQDs.

Aggregation of Disordered Proteins Associated with Neurodegeneration

Phoebe S. Tsoi et al.

Summary: Cellular deposition of protein aggregates disrupts cellular functions and leads to neuronal death. Understanding the role of protein misfolding and aggregation provides insights into neurodegenerative diseases and their common underlying molecular pathology. The major proteins involved in neurodegeneration, such as amyloid beta, tau, alpha-synuclein, and TAR DNA-binding protein, possess enhanced ability to partition into biomolecular condensates and are described as intrinsically disordered.

Metal Ion Detection by Carbon Dots-A Review

Madeeha Batool et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively explores the use of carbon dots (CDs) as metallic cation sensors. CDs are fabricated from various carbon sources and have efficient colorimetric and fluorimetric detection abilities due to surface oxygen moieties that coordinate with metal ions. Doping CDs with hetero atoms further enhances their metal detection activity, making the design of CDs with selective sensing properties and low detection limits a significant interest.

Manganese promotes α-synuclein amyloid aggregation through the induction of protein phase transition

Bingkuan Xu et al.

Summary: The major protein component of Lewy bodies, alpha-Synuclein, is found to aggregate faster with the presence of Mn2+ ions, which regulate the protein phase separation process. Mn2+ not only promotes the transition of alpha-Synuclein from liquid to solid phase, but also induces soluble alpha-Synuclein monomers to form solid-like condensates. This phase transition facilitated the aggregation of alpha-Synuclein. Additionally, the integration of lipid membranes into the condensates during the Mn2+-induced alpha-Synuclein phase transition was observed.

Essential metals in health and disease

Klaudia Jomova et al.

Summary: Twenty essential elements, half of which are metals and half are non-metals, are required for proper functioning of the human body. Metallo-regulatory mechanisms in cells help maintain homeostasis of metal-ions crucial for various cellular processes, especially in the central nervous system. Imbalances in essential metals can lead to diseases such as neurological disorders, mental health problems, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes. A multidisciplinary approach involving bioinorganic chemists, biophysicists, and biologists is needed to further understand the role of metal ions in biological systems.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common movement disorder characterized by resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. It is associated with the presence of alpha-synuclein inclusions in brain cells. Many PD patients develop dementia after several years of diagnosis. PD dementia (PDD) is similar to dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), which is diagnosed when cognitive impairment precedes parkinsonian motor signs or begins within one year from their onset.
