Effect of the preparation method on the catalytic properties of copper-containing zeolite Y applied for NH3-SCR-DeNOx

Rujito S. R. Suharbiansah et al.

Summary: Two series of zeolite Y with different particle sizes (approximately 100 or 400 nm) were prepared using different synthesis gel compositions, ageing, and hydrothermal steps. Copper-containing zeolite Y samples were obtained through ion-exchange and characterized. The catalytic activity of these materials varied significantly due to the different copper species present.

Influence of Framework n(Si)/n(Al) Ratio on the Nature of Cu Species in Cu-ZSM-5 for NH3-SCR-DeNOx

Magdalena Jablonska et al.

Summary: In this study, nanosized Cu-containing ZSM-5 catalysts with different n(Si)/n(Al) ratios ranging from 18.9 to 50.5 were prepared by ion-exchange. Physico-chemical characterization revealed that the nature and distribution of copper species are influenced by the molar ratio of framework T atoms. Spectroscopic analyses, including DR UV-Vis, TPR-H-2, EPR, and FT-IR, indicated that the amount of aggregated copper species increases with an increase in the framework n(Si)/n(Al) ratio. The activity of Cu-containing ZSM-5 in the NH3-SCR-DeNO(x) reaction significantly decreases when the n(Si)/n(Al) ratio is between 47.0 and 50.5 compared to other materials with n(Si)/n(Al) ratios of 18.9-19.6. The mechanism of the reaction was discussed based on 2D COS analysis of IR spectra and the catalytic properties of zeolites.

Comparison of Industrial and Lab-Scale Ion Exchange for the DeNOx-SCR Performance of Cu Chabazites: A Case Study

Valentina Rizzotto et al.

Summary: Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by NH3 catalysts remains essential for exhaust gas purification, particularly in heavy-duty diesel engines, despite the growing trend towards electrification of powertrains. The synthesis scale of Cu-exchanged chabazite catalysts for SCR was found to influence their catalytic performance, especially in NH3 oxidation.

OSDA-free synthesis of zeolite beta: Broadening the methodology for a successful use of the product as a seed

Junki Tomita et al.

Summary: The synthesis of zeolite beta without organic structure directing agents (OSDAs) is achieved through the addition of seed crystals. However, using OSDA-free synthesized zeolite beta as seed crystals is challenging and leads to the formation of mordenite zeolite as a contaminant. In this study, a successful post-synthetic powder technology is demonstrated for retrieving pure zeolite beta seed particles that were originally mixed with mordenite impurity. The technique involves centrifugation and allows for the segregation of pure beta microparticles for use as OSDA-free beta seeds. The recycling of this technique is successful for up to three generations. It was also found that controlling the silicon to aluminum ratio and using acid and alkali treatments aid in the formation of pure phase zeolite beta.

N2O Formation during NH3-SCR over Different Zeolite Frameworks: Effect of Framework Structure, Copper Species, and Water

Joonsoo Han et al.

Summary: The study found that Cu/CHA has a framework structure that favors the formation of AN, thereby reducing the generation of N2O, but also leading to the release of N2O through AN decomposition. The addition of water inhibits the formation of AN and increases the selectivity for AN decomposition to NO2 instead of N2O.

Efficient Strategy to Regenerate Phosphorus-Poisoned Cu-SSZ-13 Catalysts for the NH3-SCR of NOx: The Deactivation and Promotion Mechanism of Phosphorus

Zhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that washing with hot water can regenerate phosphorus-poisoned Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst, restoring its performance and prolonging its lifespan. The promotion effect of phosphorus on SCR performance after regeneration is attributed to the decrease in CuO species content and recovery of acid sites and active Cu2+ ions.

Effect of zeolite topology on NH3-SCR activity and stability of Cu-exchanged zeolites

Karolina A. Tarach et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the catalytic activity and stability of Cu-exchanged zeolites in NH3-SCR reaction, showing that the reaction mechanism involves [Cu(OH)(NH3)2(NO)](+) intermediates and reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). The differentiated speciation of copper sites plays a crucial role in determining the catalytic activity and stability of the zeolitic catalysts.

Highly Efficient NO Abatement over Cu-ZSM-5 with Special Nanosheet Features

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study focused on synthesizing and comparing different morphologies of Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO to N-2 with ammonia. Nanosheet-like Cu-ZSM-5 exhibited the best SCR performance due to its unique structure promoting the formation of active copper species and rapid conversion between Cu2+ and Cu+. In situ DRIFTS results showed that nanosheets followed the Eley-Rideal mechanism with labile nitrite species crucial for the SCR process, while nanoparticles and conventional catalysts tended to generate inert nitrates. This research provides insights for the design of efficient zeolite catalysts for NH3-SCR.

Cu-ZSM-5 Catalyst Impregnated with Mn-Co Oxide for the Selected Catalytic Reduction of NO: Physicochemical Property-Catalytic Activity Relationship and In Situ DRIFTS Study for the Reaction Mechanism

Hongyan Xue et al.

Summary: A series of MnCo/Cu-Z catalysts with different Mn/Co ratios were prepared and investigated for the SCR of NO with NH3. The Mn1Co2/Cu-Z catalyst showed the highest activity, with high-valent metal ion enrichment and improved metal oxide reducibility contributing to its enhanced catalytic performance. The nitrate species on the catalyst surface and SCR mechanism play crucial roles in the catalytic activity of MnCo/Cu-Z.

Effect of Textural Properties and Presence of Co-Cation on NH3-SCR Activity of Cu-Exchanged ZSM-5

Magdalena Jablonska et al.

Summary: Comparative studies on micro-/mesoporous Cu-containing zeolites ZSM-5 treated by NaOH, TPAOH, or NaOH/TPAOH revealed that Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst showed the highest activity. Co-cations promoted the formation of [Cu-O-Cu](2+) dimers binding strongly with NOx, with a desorption energy barrier of at least 80 kJ mol(-1).
